While it tends to be from the realms of black and death metal where we see experimentation on a much more widespread scale than arguably anywhere else in the entire underground of metal, doom still has to be one of the liveliest scenes when you take into consideration what so many bands still dare to do with the sound. There is still so much untapped sonic territory that is begging to be discovered. Still, there simply doesn’t seem to be all that many bands, relatively, who are seeking to really push the envelope to deliver something that can be called otherworldly or simply different in all regards. 0N0 was one of the most recent acts in my memory to really do something different after two releases from three years ago, and it’s now with their newest effort, they remain at the forefront of my mind when I think of challenging doom bands.

Whenever I say “challenging”, I don’t mean material that is simply hard to listen to or anything that becomes a real chore to try and absorb for any new listener for one reason or another. An excellent, challenging listen is one that approaches the listener with the ability to really deliver a performance that’s dense, shows a different side of the style in question, and begs the listener to wander deeper into the piece crafted before the listener with every layer having something new to discover than the last. In a number of ways, it’s with “Unwavering Resonance” that 0N0 has taken the next step in the evolution of their already challenge-riddled sound to bring forth an effort that’s as beefy as it is dissonant. There are but four tracks that we’re offered with this release, but it’s in every way that 0N0 manages to create a deep offering that has so many different layers to it that the more you peel back the more you realize there are as the talent of 0N0 quickly shows itself apparent amongst the griping atmospheres, a fantastic kind of dissonance that actually brings glory to the concept, and a clear understanding of the very sound that they’ve been going for since their first release 15 years ago.

It all comes together so fluidly with such a striking final performance with such a delicate level of detail under the guise of madness with every given facet playing off of each other beautifully as 0N0’s capacity for otherworldly doom shows for the utter entirety of “Unwavering Resonance” to make for a true spectacle the likes of which we simply do not see often. This is what it means to push the envelope of what doom is possible, and I know that this is but a peek behind the curtains as to what exactly 0N0 is capable of with their third full-length album certifiably not one to miss.
