Temple of Void – Summoning the Slayer

Out of the many names that have become fan favorites since the popularity of metal on Bandcamp exploded, one of the most essential for death and doom metal certifiably has to be Temple of Void. They’ve been an entity in the scene to be reckoned with since their debut eight years ago, and they’ve been on a steady and consistent rise since. Every album has seen them reach new heights of heaviness as they become more in-tune with their sound to become an undeniable force in the modern landscape of death-doom, and that trend has only continued with their newest effort album certainly destined to be hailed as their best yet.

While it’s not always the case that a band continuously tops itself with every new album, it’s hard to look at all that Temple of Void has accomplished up to this point and not be pushed to such a conclusion. Each record has brought something to sharpen the band’s sense of heaviness, devastation, and loyalty to what the style has always been without ever once compromising the band’s vision for a sound that is undoubtedly theirs, and it’s all that was brought forth for the seven tracks of “Summoning the Slayer” that we see all of that in its most mature and completed form yet. Taking cues from both included styles as well as even more influence from outside the two, it’s for this performance that we see Temple of Void at arguably their most effective at delivering heaviness that simply cannot be denied as we see the band pursue excellence with real patience until it is time to floor the gas pedal and show us just how unforgiving their tempo can truly become when the need arises. It makes the very whole of “Summoning the Slayer” an organic listen that feels very much like all that we could come to expect from this band as it has all the hallmarks of a proper effort from Temple of Void from its eye-catching cover art to its tremendous sense of power that permeates every given minute all that way down to the acoustic finale which serves as the perfect closer.

Very few elements are left to chance for this record with no stone left unturned, and it should go without saying that Temple of Void utterly dominates for the absolute entirety of it all. There have already been plenty of efforts in the world of death-doom to make this year already something worth talking about, but it undoubtedly has to be all that was brought forth in “Summoning the Slayer” that shows everybody that this is undoubtedly one of the most compelling out of all of them.
