Given how exquisite, deep, and talented the world of black metal has become in recent times, it can still somehow feel like ages if we go without hearing any new talent that hasn’t already shown their chops in another band which really gives a feeling as though the scene keeps recycling its talent. That’s far from a bad thing and nothing to complain about whatsoever, but some new blood can really breathe some new life for a listener no matter what style is the focus. While this fresh name has its debut album littered with names from bands that we’ve all come to revere in some form or another over the years, it’s the brand new name of Bekor Qilish that has quickly poised itself to be one of the new names in black metal for us to keep a very close eye on.
It’s always a good sign that you’ve come across something quite exceptional when you finish the album in question with your one and only lamentation being the fact that there simply isn’t more. In every way, that’s how I felt when I finished out this staggering debut effort for it is every given facet, layer, and detail that went into bringing about “Throes of Death from the Dreamed Nihilism” that should show any listener that Bekor Qilish has the capacity and the talent to really astound us, and yet we’ve only been dealt six tracks here. And yet, it’s in the 27 minutes that make up this record that any one of us should be able to quickly come to the same conclusion that Bekor Qilish is immediately a name that must be heralded for all that it’s already accomplished. This is the sort of record that numerous bands would take decades to produce. Still, it was with a select number of guest appearances and a supreme level of detail to his vision that the lone man behind the name was able to make “Throes of Death from the Dreamed Nihilism” that ferocious mind-bending journey that it is. There are incredibly few moments throughout this effort that gives the listener any sort of time to gain control of their sense or properly recover from what they had just experienced before getting thrown back into a cosmic-level mess that manages to be as mesmerizing as it is horrific in one fell stroke.
This is the kind of record that shows us without any argument to be had that this is a work of extreme metal that embodies so much of what that very concept can bring to the table with the work already being staggeringly mature in every aspect to really give us a fleshed out and satisfying sense of what Bekor Qilish is capable of right out of the gate. Every step of furthering madness that’s taken deeper into “Throes of Death from the Dreamed Nihilism” is nothing that’s to be taken for granted, and I can only hope that it’s not long before we hear more from the talented and plagued by insanity and passion from Bekor Qilish’s reservoir of cosmic terrors.
