Not often enough do metal musicians find the time to make music that can be considered fun. There’s nothing wrong with creating music that’s pretty serious almost all the time with the band’s image reflecting that, but there’s always something to be said about being in another act altogether that lets you cut loose and have a good time. Hell, some bands like Finsterforst didn’t hide it whatsoever and released an album that really let them party and have a fun, stupid time, but those incidents are few and far between. When we talk about the party-house of Drunk Motherfuckers, it’s hard to imagine some of the members making such a sound given what they’ve done in other bands. Yet, that didn’t stop them before their seven-year hiatus, but it’s now that they’ve returned to settle the score once and for all with a final EP that’s as fitting as it is engrossing.
It could be effortless for an album from any sort of band like this to fall apart by being too silly or too formless even if that was the intention in mind where plenty of scenarios would lead to a much more impactful album that has so much more to offer to listeners even if it’s far from mind-blowing. With a name that would turn many away but riffs that are as alluring as they are straightforward, it’s with this last hoorah that I find myself feeling a little sorry that this is intended to be the last we’re to hear from Drunk Motherfuckers. The four tracks that are brought to the table for “Dead End” never once leave the listener wanting more as they’re not intended to be anything grandiose or overwhelming with their lyrical themes, but, rather, just a band of friends getting together to have a good time and hopefully draw in like-minded people so that way we can all have a big party, forget about life, and lose ourselves in the crunchy melodies that are at play for the entirety of the EP. There isn’t any hidden message to be found here, no torment for the wretched soul before the blasphemy of man, no hate for light itself; it’s here that these musicians experienced in some form with metal have brought a satisfying transition of power into play here with all that is “Dead End” the very epitome of what it means for a bittersweet farewell.
In every form, the book of this band does not shut on a quiet note, and I don’t think those behind Drunk Motherfuckers would have it any other way. While the band has put the party to an end with what has to be their most interesting and compelling work, in my opinion, it’s the four tracks of “Dead End” that are sure to provide loads and loads of entertainment for years to come by the listeners who find themselves in the same waves of ecstasy that Drunk Motherfuckers became lost in, and that’s the true secret to making sure the party never truly ends.
