Trigona – s/t

There is always something innately special about whenever a band manages to create a gripping performance without a key factor that the vast majority of others lean on: vocals. The simple lack of a singer both greatly limits and expands the possibilities for what a band can bring to the table when it’s faced with such a shift that many might consider insurmountable, but it’s in the realm of psychedelic rock that such a hurdle has been maximized to make for one of the most engaging and fascinating styles in the entire sound. With its latest, Trigona revisited its root while still doing immense justice for the sound and its very concept with these six tracks all but effortlessly delicious.

It could be so easy for any band to revisit older material of theirs and simply slap a new coat of paint on it in the form of a fresh cover art in order to make the appearance of doing something new, interesting, or whatever descriptor can come to mind. In the case of what Trigona has done for its eponymous work, however, could not be any further from such a poor fate. With a reapproach with a more mature and sharper mindset born out of years of experience steeped in the style, the glory of the original recordings is not lost whatsoever in the remastering and rearranging of the album, the very rhythms and atmospheres of what’s brought forth here are the exact sort of material as to why many of us keep coming back to the cosmic realms of instrumental psych rock over and over again. Overflowing with wonder and a real sense of what it means to send your listening floating through the cloud and amongst the stars, Trigona is a clear example of how to improve yourself over time such that, by the end of it all, you’re a real master of your craft in such a way that cannot be seen as anything less than undeniable. In no small way, that’s just the very beginning of what has been achieved in this revisiting.

While there are always times when going against the grain to craft something particularly potent has its time and place in the world of good music, too often are the acts that keep everything simple, focused, and concise that overlooked simply because they aren’t seen as bombastic enough. Trigona is far from what many would consider a premier act of instrumental psych rock, but it is all that it brought forth in this redone offering that this act has effortlessly earned the right to be hailed as one that must be heard for those who simply desire to lose themselves between the notes and see sights heretofore unseen.
