The very worlds of horror and metal have long been intertwined with the connection between the two all but immensely obvious with the influence on each other certifiably becoming more and more apparent as the years go on. Of all the bands that have attempted to do the media justice with their music, though, it has got to be Heads for the Dead that has been the most consistent and compelling in doing so in recent years. Having only just been around for four years but made of some of the most talented musicians in the entire scene, it’s only natural that the name would get better with time, and that’s more than obvious with their third full-length album.
Since the very inception of the band, it should have been made clear to everyone everywhere that this wasn’t going to be some lightweight act with a cute little gimmick that won’t really add much to the sound to ultimately make it detrimental to the sound itself. Heads for the Dead has quickly risen above the ranks to fittingly become a cult act as their touch has gone over much of what horror media has consisted of, and it’s with all that was brought forward for “The Great Conjuration” that it should be made immensely clear that such talent has only gotten better, sharper, and far deadlier. Ten tracks across 47 minutes of unrelenting death metal, this is what it means to be truly faithful to both your sound and your various inspirations while still remaining true to yourself. From the ungodly riffage that is enough to break the very bones of the demons rising from the earth, the occasional atmosphere that gives the very howlings from hell a run for their money, and what has to be the most murderous intent from Heads for the Dead to date, the very whole of “The Great Conjuration” is not something to be trifled with. It’s a tremendous display of what these guys are capable of together with their combined experience with the result being a true display of power where they can really cut loose, throw their weight around, and still clearly have a damn good time while they’re doing it. Powerhouse death metal the likes of which invoke the very rising of maggot-ridden corpses and the themes to the very endings of worlds, how else could “The Great Conjuration” have been anything short of staggering?
This really is one of those albums that should you have already been acquainted with this band, you’d have known instantly that this record was destined for greatness. What still gets me by surprise every single time even well after a dozen hours in the record is how stupendous Heads for the Dead has become even after all that they’ve accomplished up to now. The tyranny of this band is not one that was ever going to be easy to topple, but it’s all that was brought forth for “The Great Conjuration” really makes the departure of such a great act seem all the more impossible when we’re dealing with power and brutality of this level.
