Mammoth Volume – The Cursed Who Perform the Larvagod Rites

If we were to sit here and consider the bands that helped cultivate the underground into what it has become with their respective material starting many movements decades ago, there are sure to be many names thrown around for each style with good reason. Certifiably, though, when it comes to the stoner and somewhat progressive reaches of what both metal and rock are capable of, the very mention of Mammoth Volume is something that carries immense weight to those who are aware of what such a name is capable of. For the better part of a decade, the act has been silent with us fondly looking back on what the band had helped create in a scene that’s utterly blossoming today, but it’s now with their sudden return that it is time for us to bow down yet again to their greatness.

Not every comeback album is something to lose your mind over. A simple return to the studio doesn’t immediately equal greatness no matter what band we’re dealing with be it one that never left the garage or one who commanded stages across the world. In the case of Mammoth Volume, however, the very news of the band getting back together for a fresh album turned heads for all the right reasons with the ensuing material the exact kind of glory that I don’t think many of us were ready for. Nine tracks of stoner excellence placed somewhere in the grey-lands between metal and rock along with a sizeable progressive edge that fits far too well with Mammoth Volume’s signature weirdness, “The Cursed Who Perform the Larvagod Rites” is a return that cannot be seen as anything less than monolithic! A fascinating and eclectic collection of what feels like the very apex of what this sound is capable of, there is no possible way that I can look down upon what Mammoth Volume has achieved with this marvelous work and not see it as one of the most compelling records that this year will surely throw our way. Gripping right from the beginning, overflowing with all the right kinds of weird that just keep bringing you in further and further, and a touch of quality that permeates every given moment of the work, the very essence of “The Cursed Who Perform the Larvagod Rites” is what true magnificence is made out of, making it a comeback that is just all but fitting for a band of this caliber. I would challenge anyone to look upon this creation and not call it a true wonder of music, and I will fight anyone who dares defy such an obvious truth.

There is real magic and personality in this creation to the point that it really did transport me back to my childhood when I first discovered what the world of rock is capable of with its bliss and riffs, and I cannot implore you enough to simply allow Mammoth Volume to take you wherever they may for you never know what wonders you’ll be shown. I could go on for ages about the wonders of what is to be had within “The Cursed Who Perform the Larvagod Rites”, but there’s no way I can do the words any true justice. Please, listen to this magnificence.
