The very realms of heaviness are far from lacking in any form no matter what brand of it we’re talking about. Melody or raw, heavy or atmospheric, progressive or primal; there is always something to be said for every approach no matter how much experience or lack thereof a band might possess at any given time. When Ferum first came upon the scene just a few years ago, it was made obvious to all of us that this was going to be a band that wouldn’t just hold nothing back, but one that was to go for the throat every time and make sure that our very existences would be wiped off the face of the planet. That was but four years ago. Now, Ferum’s come back to us with an exemplary creation.

Apart from being graced by the wondrous and macabre artwork of the master Paolo Girardi, the reputation of Ferum’s initial EP is the sort of thing that definitely made a reputation for itself for those of us who did experience it in all of its endless mastery of the cruelest sections of the void. It is effortlessly with every factor of “Asunder / Erode” that this band follows up on those very ideals in no less than exquisite fashion. This is the very definition of what it means for a band to take the next step in its natural evolution as every given element from the production to the very songwriting and all of its quality increases dramatically for this creation in such a way that leaves one utterly staggered by the work of death-doom that’s brought forth here. Even then, however, Ferum manages to make the sound all their own with the album utterly unforgiving. Full of all the excellence that one could come to expect from the world of death-doom whether it’s the uncompromising heaviness or power that is enough to blast the very flesh off of your bones, Ferum never once allows itself to be a one-trick pony that as we’re truly given a display of all that the style is able to bring forward in the hands of the capable with tempo changes, maximized potential in every instance, and knowledge of the sound that simply cannot be denied; “Asunder / Erode” is a consuming effort that leaves nothing to chance.

For the longest time now, the very landscape of death-doom has been something that has been heralding the very same bands that helped cultivate the style to begin with, but it is always and endlessly fascinating to witness new acts rise out of nowhere to really show us what the sound is capable of with Ferum simply being one of the latest to really show us what the new blood is able to bring forth. Every shred of “Asunder / Erode” is something that commands respect right from the very beginning to make the very future of Ferum a bloody and wildly exciting vision that will be achieved to the fullest extent of ultimate victory.
