It’s always hard to imagine how you’re going to make it through to the next year, or even the next day sometimes, if things were to keep going the way that they are. That’s a concept that I think all of us are familiar with given the pandemic that feels so distant yet all too close for many different reasons, but that was far from the only thing happening in many corners of the world that affected loads of people. But, as is the case with many, music prevails to keep us sane where all else seems to fail. Demonauta faced many adversities in the crafting of their fourth album, but it was through overcoming such hurdles that I truly believe we have what has to be the most poignant record that the band has ever created to date, even if it doesn’t sound like it or if it was even intended.
To be an act like Demonauta that’s known by many across the world as a star-exploring act that knows no bounds and manages to take people far from the reaches of the physical realm only to be held back by one social upheaval after another surely must be a cruel irony unlike anything else in the world, but it’s through such challenges that their fourth effort, “Low Melodies About Chaos”, takes on a different flavor than what its predecessors have brought to the table before. Sure, on the surface these nine tracks are precisely what we have come expect from the Chilean act where everything is as fuzzed-out as we could like, trippier than we could’ve hoped for, and more captivating than we could’ve asked for. But, it’s in the shadow of such glory that Demonauta found themselves haunted by visions happening before their very eyes and outside their homes of their world seemingly coming to an end, and it’s with such a mindset that the very subtleties of “Low Melodies About Chaos” take on a different tune. More so than ever before, Demonauta takes us on a ride that shows us a far more carefree and liberated side of their sound that’s somehow warmer than what’s come before, as if to draw you in even further, with it being clear that nothing is being left to chance nor is anything being forgotten as that terrifying shadow lingers right behind them for the whole journey. But, rather than outright running from it out of fear, it’s for the whole of the record that Demonauta manages to embrace the glory and beauty of all that’s before them with their sound, regardless of what the future might hold. It enables a fascinating listen of psychedelia that’s as freeing as it is euphoric and memorable with the very smallest moments of “Low Melodies About Chaos” not allowing immense darkness to stand in the way of living to the fullest enjoyment that you possibly can in such a world that’s still full of splendor.
In a way, Demonauta feels like returning home in some strange form that I honestly cannot quite put my finger on. The very whole of this album wraps around you like a thick, warm blanket that knows exactly where to take you and how to deliver you to a paradise that only you could hope to find with every note, beat, and passage of “Low Melodies About Chaos” being all but the perfect soundtrack to such solace. Demonauta has never once been a band to underestimate, and it’s in every given possible way that they’ve yet again crafted something of real significance with this record in such a way that cannot be looked down upon for all that it achieves despite all that stood in its way.
