The very boundaries of progressive metal are not to be quantified by the simple limitations of the human mind, for its territory is truly ever-expanding. Every month brings us at least one new effort that pushes those boundaries somewhere further whether it be large or small, and there are very few times that come around where it isn’t made out to be an absolute spectacle and feast for the ears. Progressive metal of this nature has always been supreme with all the color and fascination that it brings to the table and how dazzling the level of musicianship can be at any given time especially if it’s someone competent behind the wheel. With its debut effort, Epoch of Chirality moves than proves to be one such act.
Right out of the gate, progressive metal is already a beast that can be a lot to handle. To add on top of that an instrumental approach where it truly is the instrument that does all the talking, and we could very easily come into a realm of something completely different where the same rules don’t apply and talent truly becomes something otherworldly. Holding the attention of the listener is something that vocals tend to be useful for more often than not is a true task like few others, but it becomes clear very quickly that for the whole of the nine tracks of “Nucleosynthesis” that Epoch of Chirality doesn’t struggle whatsoever with such a hurdle. Each track has something different to call its own while simultaneously showing us more and more of what the band is capable of delivering while never once giving away all of its secrets at one time such that we’re slowly drip-fed technical and musical prowess the likes of which is all but fitting in the wide world of progressive metal. Combined with the addition of electronic elements and a sense of taste that leads to somewhere possibly in the realms of video games or retrofuturism that makes for one hell of a trip with how well it’s brought to the table for this release, and it’s hard for me to look within the depths of “Nucleosynthesis” and not be compelled by all the colors and all the splendor that Epoch of Chirality commands with a surprising aptitude for the entirety of this debut.
This is a world that I don’t find myself immersed in enough. The very promises of the style have always been alluring, yet I try to spend my time sparingly within its depths as to not burn out on the real glory that seems to be around virtually every corner of the style with Epoch of Chirality being but the tip of the spear for what’s in store. There’s so much wonder to discover with this debut, and I can’t help but feel that everything that was achieved here is but the very beginning of a good run for Epoch of Chirality.
