Whether we like it or not, death metal has reached a state that allows it to be deemed as truly amorphous. You can never truly pin it down with all deliciously diverse the sound has become over the decades with everything being tried by one band or a plethora for any given reason, and it can easily lead to a dazzling display of prowess and talent the likes of which can effortlessly become jaw-dropping in the right hands. When it came to Hussar crafting together their debut album, they could’ve done anything with no expectations whatsoever as to what we should come to expect from the very name. With the six tracks that they’ve brought forward for their first effort, how can one walk away and not be astounded by what’s to be uncovered within?
While the themes of war and death involved in such are never anything short of foreign to the world of death metal by any sort of a stretch, it’s all in the execution in order for it to come together in such a form that could ever hope to be put on the same level of acts like Benediction, just to name one. Immediately, as if they needed to prove themselves for anything or anyone, Hussar’s debut album instantly climbs the ranks of the underground in such a way that can’t be seen as anything short of staggering in its presentation and bewildering with how adept every moment of “All-Consuming Hunger” is performed. Without dropping the ball for even a microsecond, every possible facet of these six tracks and 36 minutes should be enough to get anyone on board with what Hussar has brought to the table for their very first full-length album between the dynamic nature of death metal that makes for a viciously layered experience the likes of which I don’t have the privilege or honor of witnessing often, straightforward riffage mixed with compelling progressive passages, and an all-around air of supremity that isn’t steeped in pretentiousness or narcissism. “All-Consuming Hunger” is magnificent unto its dying note. There is very little that could ever hope to rip one from an experience such as this with how competent, compelling, and intoxicating it is right from the get-go as this experience of a new name like Hussar is far from anything that should be missed by the modern death metal connoisseur with every opportunity the band took to make this a vicious experience something that can’t just be easily forgotten.
With how insane the state of death metal has become in the recent decades, a release such as this most definitely stands out for all that it achieves. From galloping riffs of magnificent proportion to its tremendous sense of what it means to take progressive to glorious extents, everything that’s poured into “All-Consuming Hunger” can’t be viewed as anything short of astounding. Hussar has already been around for a few years at this point, but it’s now with this awesome creation that they’re really able to show us what they’re made of and how they’re far from anything the underestimate in the slightest.
