Greylotus – Dawnfall

We could sit here for days and talk about the current state that the landscape of technical death metal finds itself in. It’s a glorious circumstance that is viciously compelling to lay one’s eyes upon for all the talent and grandeur that it all brings forward as it truly does feel like a sort of arms race as each band seems to up the ante with more than a few names becoming pillars of what’s possible just as new names are constantly coming out of the woodwork to deliver fresh glory through undeniable talent. From names lIke Equipoise to Devil’s Reef to The Atrophic, the list is always growing when it comes to new names always making for new headlines on a wildly consistent basis. When it comes to the first full-length album from Greylotus, that same trend absolutely applies in every form.

One of my favorite aspects of technical death metal absolutely has to be the simple fact that going from one band to the next, you never truly do get the same sound twice. That makes every subsequent experience different from the last, ensuring that there is rarely ever a dull moment even if the band in question is inexperienced and still has much to prove before they’re able to be held to a higher standard that we as fans can keep coming back to expect and receive in each given opportunity. Immediately, Greylotus shows all of us what they’re truly capable of. All that this quintet brings forth for the nine tracks of “Dawnfall” make for one of the most viciously compelling creations that I’ve been able to lose myself in from a band of this level since I first came across names like the aforementioned Devil’s Reef, Coexistence before them, and Azooma before them. Without a shred of compromisation when it comes to the unashamed display of undeniable prowess at such an early stage along with a deep emotional layer that truly does make “Dawnfall” gripping from its first flash of colorful lightning that doesn’t cease for the very whole of the record, it would be an outright insult to insinuate anything less than an absolute victory has taken place here for Greylotus. This is the sort of excellence that legends are born out of, and who are we to deny the magnificence that Greylotus has brought before us?

The very world of technical death metal could grind to a halt at this moment and we would still have loads to uncover and to talk about for months after with “Dawnfall” simply being the latest and one of the wildest examples to come out of the underground in just the last few months. Greylotus could not have possibly started off on a better foot, and if this effort is anything to learn from then the very throne of technical death metal is ripe for their taking.
