Dysgnostic – Scar Echoes

The very grotesque nature of death metal is something that can be achieved with virtually minimal effort nowadays with how well-accomplished the sound has been in that regard for decades now, but it’s almost always a spectacle when a band manages to come around that doesn’t just deliver on such magnificent power the sort of which is all-consuming and supremely dark but something that elevates itself to become much more. To come across material with a technical edge that accomplishes the feat of being an aural offensive whilst also managing to become damn near dreamlike in more than one instance is something that can feel as though it’s becoming more and more numerous as the years go on. Yet, a record that smacks such a vision right out of the park still isn’t exactly what you would call commonplace, making the debut from Dysgnostic a true sight to behold.

Witnessing any band, new or old, rising from the ashes of a previous act for any reason be it from the departure of even a single member or to signify a change in direction when it comes to the band’s sound, is something that tends to be something to pay close attention to for more than the simple act of a rechristening. Putting to sleep the name of Defilementory after thirteen years with an EP and a full-length album under its belt, the arrival of Dysgnostic swiftly brings with it “Scar Echoes”: a dazzling re-entry onto the scene that brings with all of its eight tracks a viciously dark and refined technical approach that is further bolstered by a contrast that enables swathes of the album to take on an air that cannot be seen as anything short of unapologetically haunting. Many bands in today’s climate find themselves blessed with a talented sense of technicality that is amazingly compelling given how high the skill cap has become in recent years with Dysgnostic more than living up to match their contemporaries. Immediately, this debut makes itself out to be an unforgiving creation born straight out of the fire-wreathed darkness of harrowing vision along with a truly venomous sound that quickly worms its way into your brain to make for an experience the likes of which death metal of this caliber is all but built for, yet rarely successive. It all comes together magnificently to make “Scar Echoes” an absolute beast of a performance in more ways than one with the kind of layered, calculated madness that is at play here with Dysgnostic already proving themselves here to be a name that is to be respected and known by many from here on out, for this is surely but the start of a string of granduer that will have more than enough to offer us.

The simple act of changing your name doesn’t automatically equal greatness, but it does offer a fresh slate in a way. In the case of Dysgnostic, it’s clear that they’ve maximized the opportunity that presented itself to them with every song offered up here a vicious display that can become all but effortless to lose yourself in. There’s much more to “Scar Echoes” than one might initially expect from a debut like this as it’s in every possible way that Dysgnostic starts down this new path on the best possible foot forward right out of the gate.
