Only once every so often do we get a creation that manages to capture the attention of the scene at large with the very news of an announcement, and it’s even then that such a thing tends to be reserved for those next-level acts that are a true cut above everyone else. These are names that are damn near household in how commonly they’re thrown around for comparisons or in talks of anticipation for new material. Over the years, Acid Witch has slowly climbed the ranks with its appearances always causing a stir, but it’s here with the impending arrival of their third full-length album that we’re truly able to witness Acid Witch ascend to that next level as the very news of the new opus has caused quite a ruckus with the entirety of the record easily deserving such a response and somehow more.

With just two full-lengths under their belt along with a growing reputation that leaves them in quite a spot in the underground that many would consider being coveted, the situation that Acid Witch finds themselves in here is certainly commendable by all accounts. It’s the sort of thing that immediately sets them apart from much of the scene when it comes to quality, their overall approach, and flavors that manages to pull from the realms of death metal and horror media in a largely doom form that is brought together with such aptitude and talent that it blows back the listener instantly. For all that’s brought forth with “Rot Among Us”, it’s clear that Acid Witch still has grand new heights to achieve despite all that they’ve already accomplished. Pick any track from the ten that are offered to us here in this new opus and any one of them would be able to stand proud and tall as the lead single for this record is not just entertaining, but the next step in the very evolution of Acid Witch’s sound that is already tempered to a satisfyingly deadly edge. Every piece of their sound has a spot to be played loudly for the very whole of this creation whether it’s weird and atmospheric or heavy and rhythmic, “Rot Among Us” is the closest we’ve ever been to the very soul and driving force of Acid Witch. Hypnotic at every turn and a downright joy to get lost in, the woods that ring with the sound of “Rot Among Us” are as devilishly entrancing as one could hope for, and I’ve no doubt that Acid Witch still has plenty of tricks up their sleeves to dazzle and amaze us with.

The very state of the scene of doom is the sort of thing that always keeps us on our toes no matter what others may say and no matter what bands come around for it’s because of bands like Acid Witch that we’ll always be kept on our toes given material like this. Every aspect of “Rot Among Us” is what many are constantly clamoring for as we find ourselves in the midst of vicious talent and power that never ceases to amaze in the endless depths of the underground with it all but fitting that Acid Witch would be the ones to deliver a creation like this.
