To simply dip your toe into what can happen in the world of black metal when you take the smallest shred of innovation to it is to find yourself before an unyielding beast that very few are able to tame as it is constantly seeking to burst forth in all of its splendorous fury to attack without discrimination. It’s always a tremendous sight to behold when we’re able to come across a band that manages to tap into that power with true aptitude and talent with it absolutely being a sight to behold should it simply be done by the right hands, and despite being a new name on the scene by all accounts, Epectase is quickly proving itself to be a name to respect in that realm. With its second full-length album, it becomes clear right from the beginning that we’re now able to witness Epectase fully come forth, fully unfurl its wings, and show us what its really made of.

While it was with their debut just a few years ago that Epectase burst forth onto the scene with tremendous power and already a grand understanding of their craft, it was clear to those who experienced it that the record was but the tip of the spear for what the band is capable of bringing forth. Their concoction of black metal with progressive avenues was certainly something that was a treat to the ears, but it’s in every possible form with its successor, “Nécroses”, that the treat evolves itself into a full-on course meal complete with all the bells and whistles that one could ever dare expect out of such a transition even if three years doesn’t seem like enough time to bring such a thing to life. In any of the four tracks that are presented to us here, one cannot expect to find anything less than a spectacular array of what progressive black metal can look like when it’s put in the hands of the talented and the audacious, and Epectase clearly fits the bill at every given opportunity. Each minute of “Nécroses” offers something that the previous didn’t with Epectase always doing a spectacular job at pulling off the grand task of never knowing what will happen next to really help give this album life that progressive black metal is always longing for with this being precisely what any of us could’ve possibly asked for! A creation that keeps you on your toes and on the very edge of the seat while satisfying every desire that one might have from a style as unpredictable and crazy as this, “Nécroses” is certainly not one to miss by any means.

Epectase absolutely started off on a tremendous note with their first album, but it has to be in every percievable way that the name has returned to us in no less than stupendous fashion with the talent, experience, and passion behind this band coming together gloriously to make for a magnificent aural performance the likes of which we simply don’t get often enough. There’s so much to lose yourself in once you begin to find the secrets that are held within “Nécroses” and its vast array of spectacularity that never seems to end even well after the record comes to a close.
