Eaters of the Soil – Eaters of the Soil EP III

At some point, it stands to reason that the more a band puts out in a relatively short amount of time will result in less than satisfactory creations as time goes on. It’s something that has befouled many, many names and will continue to do so as long as there are those that don’t take the proper time to really cultivate and tweak their creations to become the best that they can be, rather than simply slap a “finished” stamp on it to simply pump out another release. Such a fate is what I’m concerned for whenever I find myself returning to Eaters of the Soil, now the fourth visitation since discovering them just thirteen months ago, but it’s such that at this point I’m still pleasantly surprised by what this act is still able to bring to the table.

The very nature of a band like this will never result in an album that is shiny or highly produced in any facet, for when you have a name like Eaters of the Soil and an approach like what this band has then “polished” is never going to become an associated word. However, the quantity over quality predicament is still something that this band can more than easily fall into if their not careful, but it’s so far that they’ve managed to somehow avoid such a fate as it’s now with their third self-titled EP that I find myself impressed by what this band accomplishes. While relatively unchanged in their methods, it’s clear with these four tracks that Eaters of the Soil continue to dig themselves deeper into special levels of depravity as they carve through the darkest depths of humanity’s soul and all the nastiness the world has to offer. With the addition of a clarinet as well to go along with the trombone-driven density that’s always kept viciously tight and outright murderous, we see Eaters of the Soil still holding to those core values they laid forth at the very beginning whilst still leaving room for them to try something new with their experimental tendencies still more than having a say in the end.

The result is a creation that feels like the next natural step in what Eaters of the Soil has been burrowing for just over a year now, and while there is something to say about how quickly this band churns out new releases, there is more to be said about the very quality of what they bring forward for should you simply succumb to what they have to offer, it becomes evident that few acts are quite like Eaters of the Soil. Every level of the underground has acts to marvel at, and it’s along the very floorboards of the scene that we get acts like these who thrive in the darkness and obscurity,
