While I’m always more of a fan when splits are more likened to combined performances for one cohesive experience than anything else, there’s nothing wrong with a brief offering that leaves an impression of what each band is able to bring to the table. Given that, however, it’s important that the involved bands still manage to bring forth worthwhile material. Otherwise, it really does feel as though the involved tracks are little more than throwaway material that would otherwise be rotting away in some forgotten folder on the band’s computer. In the case of both Putird and Hexorcist, “lacking” is not a word that has ever been associated with either band, so it’s only fitting a split between the two would follow suit.
At not even a full 12-minute runtime with two tracks for each band to call their own, it wouldn’t be a stretch of any imagination to say that “Profane Coronation” doesn’t look like much at first glance. And, quite honestly, it’s not far from the truth, especially when compared to the previous works that both bands have brought to the table. While this is but a glimpse into what efforts like “Antichrist Above” or “Evil Reaping Death” brought to the table, what each band brings forward here is still nothing less than gripping on their own as both Putrid and Hexorcist retain the established excellence they’ve made for themselves, there just simply isn’t a lot of it to go around for “Profane Coronation”. Without having the room to sprawl out with all their power and capability to such an immense degree, it would be hard for any band to bring their sound to the table in a meaningful fashion to the point that you can confidently say that you’ve truly gotten a taste of what it’s like to lose yourself in each band’s sound, but it’s here that Putrid nor Hexorcist have such an issue. Each act brings their typical energy to the table in such a way that I can tell you for a fact that what’s been summoned here for “Profane Coronation” is indicative of what both are easily capable of with it but a small glimpse as to what’s possible.
This is as acidic a combination if ever there was one with the very reality of this split something that many try to do with their own attempts, but it’s only with exceptional acts that we’re able to get even offering that even begin to compare to creations like this even if we’re left wanting more. There isn’t a shred of “Profane Coronation” that isn’t a true window into what both Putrid and Hexorcist are able to deliver when given the chance to fully throw their weight around, and even with this split being little more than appetizer for what’s to come hopefully soon, there’s no denying how delicious it is right from that first bite.
