Monovoth – s/t

When you’re dealing with a talented individual that dares to cross the boundaries of music for one reason or another, there really isn’t any proper way to guess what direction such a character will turn next. You could see the individual effortless turn from synthwave to the world of black metal to Americana in the span of just a few months. Having dipped his toe in the world of experimental death metal of all places along with other acts in varying styles, Lucas Wyssbrod now finds himself steeped in the world of doom with imagery that’s downright befitting of the most captivating visages the sound is capable of with the very reality of this eponymous effort not one that should be missed.

While there are some stretches with this album that can be made when it comes to the imagery and tone of the record in order to place the effort firmly in the world of funeral doom, I don’t think that would be accurate or even necessary given the very nature of the album. Organic and frenetic in its approach that tackles tremendous themes of cosmic solitude combined with the visage of some outer being in the form of a female looming overhead, Monovoth’s first full-length creation is of the sort that is downright gripping, engaging, and vicious in its pursuit for the spread of what darkness it could summon. No two tracks are alike in this self-titled album as not only does Monovoth seek to set itself apart from much of what many might expect to find in the world of doom with some mild sense of heaviness or riffs that go well with some fuzz, but, rather, an onslaught upon the senses that deconstructs much of the barriers that one might put up when venturing into an effort as venturous and unforgiving as what Monovoth has presented us with here. Jammed together into one form that’s as uncompromising as it is unyielding in its vision to present us with something that is an unspoiled performance of the vision born out of Wyssbrod’s undeniable talent and imagination, Monovoth’s eponymous creation is not something that is to be missed in any form by anyone who wants to find themselves in the midst of doom that is not afraid to challenge boundaries and try new ideas.

Innovation is always something that has been a driving force in music since its earliest days, and that continues to prove true even in the depths of the metal underground even if some might claim that everything has been done to exhaustion. It’s in such a climate that acts like Monovoth are still able to come around and utterly dominate in their respective corners with few able to really come close to what has been brought forth, and it’s with all that was delivered in this effort that one should be all but pleased with what this first go at a full-length album accomplishes.
