In the day and age that death metal finds itself in, it’s not uncommon anymore to find any cohesive unit of musicians as a tour de force not to be trifled with when in the proper form with new bands popping up all over that many to not only keep the genre going insanely strong but bringing it all forth in such fashion that’s no less than utterly compelling. That being said, we’re occasionally treated to a line-up that’s no less than devastating in its potential. Upon the very announcement of Leper Colony coming into existence, many should have turned their eyes to the name. Featuring a trio that draws experience from Morgoth, Paganizer, Ribspreader, and Consumption, how could Leper Colony’s debut album have been destined to be anything short of a necessary listen?!

It’s hard to look at all that a record like this has going for it and not feel utterly compelled to say that it’s all but destined for immense greatness, but the universe can be cruel in that regard as we’ve seen on more than one occasion such match-ups falling short of that grand potential. With so much as the first track from this eponymous debut, it should be clear right out of the gate that Leper Colony is anything but a failure. Death metal that takes more than a handful of cues from the realm of thrash, the nine waves of undead offensive from this record are precisely what the very cravens of the death metal underworld are constantly hungering for! Every cue and decision that’s taken throughout the very whole of this record finds the listener plunged right into that damn good old-school worship. At the same time, the vastly mature talent and tenacity of the band members push the sound to become so much more than just a mere collection of lively riffs hoping to emulate its influences. Rather, Leper Colony makes it clear from its earliest notes that it’s a beast all of its own kind that is more than capable of demolishing all who stand before it with power unbounded and prowess with death metal that is simply undeniable in every form. The very idea of bringing together such talent for a new band is always a fascinating prospect even after all we’ve witnessed, and it’s without question that Leper Colony more than fits the bill of a name that demands to be heard and respected for not only has everyone involved already astounded us many times before, it is with the simple arrival of this effort that Leper Colony claims the first major success that death metal will likely have going into the new year.

There’s never a shortage of quality and nastiness to be found in the utmost depths of what the realm of death metal has always been able to bring forward and to witness the rising of a new name is always a pleasure that few others can liken to for all that it entails and all that such potential can bring rise to. In the case of Leper Colony, I challenge anyone to stare into the madness of this debut and be anything short of wildly compelled by all that has been accomplished and not have your imagination tickled wondrously as to what else the name is able to deliver in such exquisite detail.
