After a seven-year wait, damn near anything can happen to a band’s sound. It can be taken in any and all directions should a band lose sight of its original vision, have a change of heart, want to make the tiniest of tweaks to its performance; anything! Only those who are undeniably committed to their craft can return from such a period of slumber and create an effort that only further embodies what came before it, if not further enhances those deadly creations. When it comes to Heaving Earth it doesn’t seem like seven years since their last opus, but it’s clear upon even the briefest of investigations into their newest work that those seven years were well-spent to hone their already vicious brand of death metal.
Many of us like to sling around the word “uncompromising” because it’s one of those buzzwords that really grab the attention of people and can be stuck onto virtually any work of relative heaviness so that the word can fit even if only loosely. When a band comes around with an album that perfectly embodies what it means to be uncompromising, however, such an experience can be downright eviscerating in even its smallest moments. In the case of Heaving Earth, we’d be hard-pressed to find a band more qualifying of such with the madness that is their latest effort, “Darkness of God”, only further cementing how uncompromising of an act they truly are. Almost fifty minutes of apocalyptic death metal that would only cease to put an end to this measly existence, Heaving Earth’s return is vicious from all fronts with more than a few riffs that keep you looked in place, an overall sense of overwhelming power that leaves you floored by its massive unending presence, and utterly murderous even when we see the band pull back for a brief moment to add a level of contrast that is outright bewildering. It’s all brought together with such a menacing tenacity that brings nothing but utter domination to the table at every turn that you cannot help but be astonished by what “Darkness of God” delivers with no track here weak in any form whatsoever with Heaving Earth the perfect vessel to remind us what it means to be wholly and truly uncompromising.
An act born from the very floor of the underground and one that refuses to cut corners at any point in their time, Heaving Earth is a name that demands respect whenever they throw their weight around with attention more than warranted whenever they do. Such sights as what we’re given with “Darkness of God” cannot be underestimated for all that it dares to execute in its nine tracks of suffocating evisceration with anybody who dares to make the claim of being a true connoisseur of the underground would do well to take note of what’s been conjured for this unyielding performance.
