As we see the many different avenues of pscyhedelia become more fleshed out as the years go on with new blood constantly coming into the fold to show us what is still possible, it’s only inevitable that fan favorites would rise out of unlikely places. We haven’t lived in a world where genre hubs are restricted to a few countries anymore. Rather, you can find each style in any part of the world should you be lucky enough to find them or really get your hands dirty looking hard. With four tremendous pieces already under their belt before the new year even started, it’s with their fifth effort that Black Sky Giant continues its pursuit to dominate the first part of this decade with no less than immense talent and a flair for the dramatic, intoxicating, and outrageously fun.
While I was damn near convinced that the one-year gap that we had between this release and its predecessor would’ve been shorter given Black Sky Giant’s track record in 2021 and 2022, you just can’t rush excellence. Even then, though, a wait of merely a year is downright paltry when we’re talking about quality the likes of which Black Sky Giant has quickly become known for with this new offering of “Primigenian” with all that it brings to the table both what we’ve come to expect from Black Sky Giant as well as the next natural step in the band’s sonic evolution. Already packed out the ass with tremendous riffage that was more than perfected by the time of the band’s second release, it is here on “Primigenian” that we see the wordless storytelling taken to a tremendous level with every ounce of these six tracks showing us what else this band is capable of one layer at a time with the synths more hypnotizing than ever, the riffs undeniable in every form, and the sheer flow of the record going from one track to the next more seamless than that of a mighty river into the monstrous sea. Where here I thought the first instrumental powerhouse that will grace 2023 was going to be Clouds Taste Satanic, it’s clear that Black Sky Giant beat them to the punch in no less than magnificent fashion with this a work that can’t be seen as anything less than an immense victory for Black Sky Giant as they continue their vicious ascent through the scene with more than a few rightfully calling the name one of the best rising talents out there right now to lose ourselves in.
Talent like this is of the sort that when it strikes, it strikes unbelievably hot! The speed at which Black Sky Giant gained a cult following is incredibly warming to my heart with their particular approach to instrumental psychedelia is what I feel we always need more of in a scene that is always looking to branch out into different directions with the simple removal of a voice sometimes that greatest and scariest transition that some can dare think of. Yet, that didn’t stop bands like this from emerging to deliver massive works like “Primigenian” that don’t just dare to tackle such a challenge but utterly dominate it to the very fullest.
