Apocalypses and various cataclysms are far from an unexplored topic in the world of metal especially given how many take the stance that we are in the process of another ongoing mass extinction event, but it still remains a topic that can make for compelling albums when put in the right hands. Sinniht made it clear with their album from last year, “Profane Geometry”, that it’s not afraid from delving into dark thematic territories after barely escaping the nuclear wasteland of man’s blunders in the atomic realm with the act’s gaze now looking into the deep past before looking again upon the present. As off-putting in its terror as before and unyielding in its offensives, Sinniht’s latest is yet another work of what it means to become uncomfortable yet undeniably effective.
Whether we’re talking about more well-known acts like Cattle Decapitation or underground finds like Thecodontion, pre-history is not something that can be considered unexplored throughout the world of metal by any means, but no one can attest that there are more than just a few attempts out there that even approach the subject. It requires a sound that can encapsulate that of the world turning in on itself and a significant portion of life across the planet being snuffed out as fast as the snapping of fingers in geologic terms, and Sinniht already proved itself to be a worthy name to attempt such chaos given its previous two efforts. Across six tracks that cover the five established mass extinctions throughout the millennia from the Ordovician to the Cretaceous with the highly debated Anthropocene extinction even finding a place here as the ominous, foreboding ending track, “Extinction Manifold” does its job in a straightforward manner that’s as callous and uncaring for life before it as the very doldrums of death itself as more and more species come under its shadow. Slow in its pace but horrifying in its presence given what it dares to bring forward, Sinniht’s third effort is one that is not to be taken lightly as it effortlessly gets under your skin, writes into the deepest layers of your soul, and decays every fiber of your being from the inside out as you helplessly claw forward knowing that the only permanent thing in this world is change.
“Extinction Manifold” takes its slow recall of deep time’s passed natural extinction events to make the current man-made genocide upon the global wilderness one that the listener feels to its core as the existential terror powered by MIDI forces those who find themselves at the end of this cataclysmic to succumb to the very power of Sinniht who is building itself up to be an entity that truly scrutinizes that acts of man as it bastardizes the natural beauty of the world. What fires of futility and mankind’s foolishness will follow next, we can only wait to find out.
