Morass of Molasses – End All We Know

It’s one thing to craft music that’s trippy and teleports the listener to a new world that rides on the waves of many who have come before, but it’s another thing entirely to craft an experience that pushes the boundaries in more ways than one. Anything from the branching realms of psychedelia is always begging for expansion given the limitless potential that’s always on the table when those flavors are in play with only the bold and the talented able to capitalize on such potential in any real meaningful form. Every so often, though, a name comes around that manages to do just that and somehow just a little bit more. Morass of Molasses has been a name to know for some time now, but it is with their third full-length album that they’ve made another standout release that demands to be heard and experienced.

Something that I’ve noticed after years of being immersed in many different kinds of psychedelic rock and metal is something that I don’t think many pay attention to: a vast majority of the material out there is squeaky clean in terms of production and approach. Few records and bands out there dare to bring any sort of grit or nastiness to their trippiness with any successful attempt quickly making itself a potent listen that isn’t like much else out there. Morass of Molasses has been honing its sound in that exact category for years now with the eight tracks of “End All We Know” being a terrific demonstration of what it means to add a significant yet very accessible level of grit to the power of psychedelia in a flavorful concoction that really knows how to pull the listener further into its depths. Jam-packed with intoxicating riffage, this performance reeks of an attitude that still feels as though the natural habitat of Morass of Molasses is in the garage of one of its members where they can be as raw and focused in their craft as they please with all the melodies and weaving paths that come forth to form “End All We Know” devilishly interesting for all that they dare bring to the table. This is a record that adheres to many of the core principles of what modern psychedelics have while never once being afraid to try something atypical in order to deliver a performance that can be likened to very few other performances out there in the modern landscape of psychedelia with it all but fitting that a record like this would come from the likes of Morass of Molasses of all the bands out there.

A little bit goes a long way in the right hands. Just a dash of dirt and grittiness has effortlessly enabled Morass of Molasses to stand out from the crowd seemingly without effort as “End All We Know” accomplishes its goal many times over as you find your way through the mysterious bog that spawns this wonderful creation. In a genre that is ripe for experimentation, “End All We Know” stands tall as an feat that is not to be denied for all of its victories.
