The concept of identity is something that many throughout the world of black metal tend to hunt for even if they aren’t aware of it with very few able to achieve it in such a way that really sets them apart from much of the common rabble. While there are plenty that find it to be more fitting for the genre to stay back in the shadows as some formless presence that is always lying in wait, a tenacious act that can come around and really make their impact known can make for quite a performance if everything is lined up right in the crafting of any given album. For their debut creation, Cursebinder didn’t just hope to bring together different elements to make for an interesting and dynamic entrance, they succeeded at virtually every turn.

It’s far from any sort of secret anymore that those who dabble in other genres whilst retaining an undeniable core of black metal can make for truly otherworldly performances if they approach it with the right mindset and the will to see the deed out all the way to its proper end. That has brought us numerous creations that can be as bold as they are adventurous in more ways than one with new names constantly seeking to achieve the same level of grandeur in their own releases, and Cursebinder is one of the few to come upon the scene with a creation that pulls it off magnificently in every category. Virtually from the very beginning, “Drifting” makes itself known as an effort that doesn’t just wander along many different avenues that black metal has been found before while always going out of its way to keep the listener guessing as to what precisely is coming next as Cursebinder’s flavor profile becomes all the more exquisite and layered the deeper into the eight tracks you go. Between the enchanting melodies and the ferocious power of black metal that proves to be strong foundations from which Cursebinder truly flourishes, this is an album that quite sets itself apart from much of the rest of the scene with there being very few other names that can be closely likened to what has been accomplished here in any way. “Drifting” puts Cursebinder on a particularly promising path from here on out with all that’s been delivered here nothing but a must-hear creation that purveyors of adventurous black metal should make a point to explore for its sights, its wonders, and its glories are precisely what many of us are constantly seeking.

There is always a huge amount of talent and glory to be found throughout the very whole of black metal should you look in the right places, but acts that are as dynamic and promising as what we have here with Cursebinder cannot be seen as anything short of a true exception. All that has been summoned to make “Drifting” such a sight is what true creations of excellence are made out of with all that was done here making one wonder just what else Cursebinder is capable of with this as their starting foundation for further glory.
