To put your best foot forward in a scene as dense and overcrowded as death metal to then have that performance stand out to a significant degree is to truly accomplish a great deal. It’s hard enough for bands who have been around for decades already to make themselves known in any form as they try to compete for the spotlight for even a microsecond with all of the vicious competition that’s out there at any given time it being even harder for brand new acts to gain a proper foothold. Thus, it’s such that when a new band instantly makes its impact known that we know we’re in for something special. I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into with Ignominy’s first full-length album, but I left it after several hours highly impressed with what I was met by.
As time has gone on, the word “dissonant” is something that the world of death metal has been seeing a lot more of over the years for one reason or another be it for better or for worse. That can be as much a deal breaker as it can be a vicious disappointment depending on the band in question with few able to capitalize on such potential with even fewer managing to go even further beyond. We would normally expect bands like Ulcerate to deliver such majesty, but there are a few select bands out there that are slowly rising to the occasion and are able to deliver performances that succeed in their own ways without even a shred of compromisation. With all that they brought forth in the fittingly named new album of “Imminent Collapse”, Ignominy knows not the concept of failure. A cutthroat creation that holds nothing back in any regard with more than enough room for contrast and perspective amidst an undeniable whirlwind of magnificent fury and craftsmanship that is downright earth-shattering, this is death metal that’s schizophrenic is the best way possible with Ignominy able to control this beast with surprising aptitude while never once diluting the raw power that’s at play in all eight monolithic tracks. Nothing is left to chance as the very power of “Imminent Collapse” is the apex of overwhelming even as Ignominy is able to calculate the best moments to pull back and allow their terrifying atmospheres to creep in under your skin before the subsequent explosion of raw energies bursts you from within.
This is a record that bewilders from all sides with the very future of Ignominy viciously promising if this is what the band is able to summon forth just four years after their first EP with the prospects of any follow-up instantly mouth-watering. What’s presented to us here is power unbridled and extremely high potential at every possible turn with only the astute veterans and true heatseekers in the world of death metal able to find the macabre glory that lies at the deepest levels of “Imminent Collapse”.
