The Golden Grass – Life is Much Stranger

For some time now, there has been a bit of a movement in the world of psychedelic work where there is a clear reverence and passion for the classic veins of the style with there being more than a few bands out there that seek to keep it alive as much as they can. Much like in the realms of extreme metal where those classic sounds will always have an audience with plenty of purveyors, this is a sound that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon but it’s not terribly often that we’re treated to a name that manages to not just do justice for the style but show us that there’s still more than enough glory to be brought forth by the right people. Having been around for a little while now, The Golden Grass is a name that I’m sure is familiar to some but it infuriates me that it isn’t known further beyond! What’s accomplished here doesn’t just pay homage to those classic flavors, but pushes it all forward in magnificent fashion!

When we’re dealing with rock such as this, there is always the dangerous trap of any band in question planting their feet too much to the ground to result in a sound that can become incredibly in tune with the desired creation but can effortlessly end up feeling stale and one-dimensional. Right out of the gate, The Golden Grass proves itself to be an entity that defies any such pitfalls to deliver a performance that is just as massive in its presence as it is inclusive in the different themes and influences that play a part in bringing the seven tracks of “Life is Much Stranger” to life in exquisite detail. No two songs sound quite alike with the very whole of the fourth full-length from The Golden Grass feeling as though you’ve been transported to the undeniable golden age of psychedelic rock with experimentation and wonder abound no matter where you turn with it feeling as though any band is ready to take off on a stellar career should they make a turn to the right rather than the left. It’s intoxicating right from the get-go with every note of this performance executed to magnificent effort without so much as the tiniest of hitches to be had amongst any of the trippy rhythms as The Golden Grass proves itself time and time again to not just be a ferociously talented act whose name needs to be far more widespread, but one that constantly defies the odds.

“Life is Much Stranger” is a record that can only come from the truly talented and those supremely committed to their craft, and if that doesn’t describe The Golden Grass to a tee then I don’t know what would! I was being driven mad just a few days ago wondering why Australia’s Khan wasn’t more widespread, but it’s now that the insanity is truly settling in for The Golden Grass needs to be known across the world for what they’ve delivered up to this put with all that’s gone into “Life is Much Stranger” a massive effort in every way the likes of which we simply don’t see often whatsoever.

“Life is Much Stranger” releases on April 7th via Heavy Psych Sounds!
