Too often the deeper reaches of black metal get immense injustice done to them. There is so much potential and excellence that can be done with little to no production so long as it’s done right by hands that actually care about what they’re crafting, but it feels all too often that we get names that just slap some strings together in some pathetic attempt at riffs with some loose howls meant to pass as vocals. It can easily be made into some of the most potent and evocative black metal out there, but to find such names is to find yourself before a real find that few others may ever discover themselves. With its very first demo and just two tracks to its name, Unohdus is already well on track to surpass many of its contemporaries that flail on the floor of the underground.

A piece such as this is what it means to make your music simple, straightforward, and viciously effective because of its barebones approach. Raw, melancholic black metal that wastes no time and truly embraces many of the core ideals of the genre while showing tendencies towards the depressive branch of the sound that’s paired with a magnificently performed violin, “Niin Turhaan Tähdet Valaisivat Meitä” is a demo that is begging for an immensely small yet extremely devoted following. For all that it is in its runtime that doesn’t even stretch to ten minutes overall across two tracks, Unohdus accomplishes a lot more than what many are able to bring to the table in eight tracks over forty minutes. With mid-paced rhythms that invoke notes from the realm of doom metal to add further flavorful to this already surprisingly interesting pair of tracks, Unohdus does a magnificent job at keeping the listener guessing as to precisely what is coming next while always delivering when it comes to opening the eyes wide to the very foolishness of humanity as well as its notions towards the fate of self-destruction. Few are able to bring together such a package at all much less on their very first go around with all that’s been presented in “Niin Turhaan Tähdet Valaisivat Meitä” amazingly promising from all angles as the melodies only further pull you in while by the end the very howls of Unohdus are the only solace that you can find as you drift throughout the dense, impenetrable void.

Potential like this does not come around often, and I would demand anyone who claims to be any sort of connoisseur of undeniable black metal to investigate this demo in all of its ten minutes which are downright fleeting. This is a talent that deserves to have an eye kept sharply on it at all times, and I can promise you that I certainly will be with whatever follow-up that is to come after “Niin Turhaan Tähdet Valaisivat Meitä” one of the few creations throughout the underground that actually deserves the moniker of being highly anticipated, in my opinion.
