Khan – Creatures

With all that is constantly happening in the many different worlds of psychedelic music, it’s not hard to have any number of names pass you by. It doesn’t take much for a newer or smaller name to go right under your radar for any number of reasons with it being just as effortless to miss big names considering how many of them there always seem to be at any given time no matter what. When I sat down today looking for a new record of trippiness, I wasn’t sure what I would find with the possibilities damn near endless as I await with many others for the new Rezn that is still unreleased at the time of this typing. Eventually, though, I found my way toward Khan whose new album makes me wonder why I haven’t even heard of this name before given how tantalizing this latest effort is in damn near every form.

Having put out their first creation only seven years ago and following a steady release schedule since then with there being no more than less than three full years between each fresh offering, it confounds me from top to bottom that it has taken four albums from Khan for me to have even come upon the name accidentally. Frankly, I find that quite infuriating. If a talent like this has gone largely unheralded to the point where the very name of Khan is virgin to my mind, then I consider that an outright crime upon all good things in psychedelia! What’s been accomplished within the six tracks of “Creatures” shouldn’t be viewed as anything short of a testament to what happens when the right talent finds its sound and manages to not just capitalize at every turn, but blow any sort of expectations right out of the water without so much as a shred of compromisation or moment of hesitation throughout the very whole of the record. Khan nails the contrast of much of what psychedelic rock has always been capable of from its groovy rhythms that lure you into grand expansions of color and wonder to outright delicious riffage that really ties everything together so neatly that “Creatures” begs to be labeled as utterly scrumptious out of the very gate! This breed of album is what can only be brought about when the stars are truly aligned in such a way that magnificent genius and clear passion make for one hell of a concoction that never knows when to let up nor does it ever slack for so much as a microsecond. A find such as “Creatures” is the closest thing to ultimate magic in the vast underground with the likes of Khan more than deserving of widespread recognition for all that they’ve brought to the table and deliver in stupendous fashion.

I’ve long held Australia in high regard when it comes to all things in the world of music since it really does seem as though the country never knows how to bat for zero in any genre be it death metal or hip-hop, and that seems to be the case yet again with Khan more than comfortable amongst the ranks of Australian psych-rock that doesn’t know how to disappoint. “Creatures” deserves a devout following for all that it is and manages to be despite Khan’s criminal treatment of being viciously underrated, and I will make damn sure not to be in the dark anymore as Khan moves forward. I suggest you don’t be either.
