The old school of death metal is something that is never going to die. Even as it can feel as though we’re constantly swarming in hordes of opinions that claim the old ways are dead and nothing but posers populate the land anymore, I cannot help but vehemently defy such a viewpoint. The most casual of death metal fans should be more than astute enough to look upon the vast depths of the underground and not just be confident that many threads of the old school are still draped in the modern landscape of the style, but the roots are still incredibly strong! Bands from all over continue to crop up wherever one may look with those roots still having strong representation with acts like Pustilence new but exceedingly talented names at perpetuating the macabre excellence in stupendous fashion.
It’s always amazingly tricky to try and balance your reverence for something that’s been well-established for decades while implementing your own flavors to the approach such that the end result of any creation doesn’t come across as uninspired or an outright copy with no shame in any shred of its being. That’s a problem that is constantly looming over any band out there that tries to perpetuate all that the old school of death metal has to offer with only the truly adept able to overcome that challenge in order to put together massive efforts that don’t just bring further glory to this vein of death metal, but it shows us there is still more than enough excellence to throw around with the sound. For its first full-length creation, Pustilence hit the nail right on the head at every turn. Eleven tracks that show us at every possible opportunity that Pustilence is a three-dimensional act that doesn’t simply pick one avenue of death metal, “Beliefs of Dead Stargazers and Soothsayers” shows us all that Pustilence is able to summon forth so soon in its time in the underground. Not so much as a moment is wasted here as we’re given a supreme lesson in what it means to hold steadfast to your great influences while never once diminishing their power by crafting madness of your own as it’s the dark corners of this album that constantly hold immense beasts waiting to leap out for your soul while the very presence of Pustilence is nothing something that can be taken lightly in any form once you step inside all that “Beliefs of Dead Stargazers and Soothsayers” has to offer.
As the scene as a whole move into the future, I have no doubt that so long as bands like Pustilence continue to come around that the old school of death metal will always have many voices and more than enough representation to ensure that it never goes away so long as metal itself lives on. And with albums like “Beliefs of Dead Stargazers and Soothsayers”, how can one not feel as though the future of the genre on every level is not in incredibly capable hands?
