Domination is the name of the game in the vast swathe of all that death metal encapsulates with some veins particularly more potent than others. For the Swedes, their contribution to death metal has left a long-lasting impact that we’re still feeling in great volume in today’s climate with their grip upon the genre as a whole still wildly undeniable. Wherever you look, there are always more than a few Swedish acts that adorn people’s lists of need-to-know names, foundational records, and a fan favorite that will never die any time soon. As one of the newer names in the scene, Vomitheist finds themselves amidst a ton of competition from all sides. It is critical with their first full-length album to make one hell of an impression, and I’ll be damned before I even think of insinuating that they didn’t deliver.

I think it’s safe to say that when many think about what Swedish death metal brings to the table, thoughts of massive riffage and undeniable power come to mind more so than many other branches of the style with this particular sound always knowing how to crank everything up to just another level altogether to really make the presence more than felt. Across eleven tracks with a 45-minute runtime, Vomitheist’s entry into the scene at large is a bold one that pays more than enough respect to the very roots and traditions of all that the style has become known for over the decades with the very soul of “NekroFvneral” nothing that can be easily dismissed. This is a record that is the result of real passion coupled with a certifiable knack for the kind of festering, reeling death metal that has always had a home in Sweden with the mere songwriting of this record of the sort that does more than grab you by the throat in order to really show you what it’s made of. Rather, “NekroFvneral” goes for your soul in order to wholly entomb you in its power while the unmistakable riffage pummels your bones into dust, the snap of Vomitheist’s aura enough to corrupt all who come before it, and the tenacious attitude of everything that’s poured into this record more than enough to keep you rooted in place.

Sandwiched between an absolute banger of an opener to a sprawling 12-minute closer that holds a real scorched earth policy is Swedish death of the sorts that’s precisely what many are constantly searching for throughout the ever-growing scene that we’re lucky to find ourselves in. The entrance of Vomitheist is not something to be underestimated in any form with the absolute entirety of “NekroFvneral” truly embodying what it means to be wholly and undeniably dominating!
