When we think about how far the realm of stoner metal has come since the turn of the century, it’s a bewildering thing to comprehend. It’s in the most recent of those years that we’ve seen more than a few names rise out of the very depths of the underground to deliver performances that are just as powerful as they are competently built with there also seeming to be a new name that comes around managing to deliver excellence in some form or another. Despite having been around for only five years now, 1782 has made quite the impression upon the scene in a way that cannot simply be ignored. While it was with their last full-length two years ago that brought many interested eyes to the band, it has to be with their upcoming third that 1782 performance has reached quite a high point.
Heaviness and stoner music have always had a tremendous partnership evrer since the earliest days of such a union with all sorts of legends being born from it that are still considering revolutionary and wildly influential by all accounts with it feeling as though all manner of related names of fresh blood revere those old roots to the fullest extent. Since day one, 1782 has been a name that has commanded respect by many who bear witness to the band’s power. It’s not a band that has shaken up the scene when it comes to innovation by any means, but it’s the sheer proficiency and tempered power at the disposal of 1782 that makes “Clamor Luciferi” the declaration of immense domination that it is right from the very beginning. A thematic callback to the very legend associated with all things that dwell in Hell and its dark, bloody halls whose echoes still resonate in the minds of men throughout history, this is an ferocious album that truly takes the intensity of the stoner scene with all the supremacy and focus of doom metal to make for a tremendous creation package with immense fuzzed-out riffage that rattles the skull and captures the soul. This is what many try to bring forth in this particular vein of metal with few able to achieve what 1782 has here.
“Clamor Luciferi” is not a mere collection of melodies slapped together within a thin veil of smoke, but, rather, a bold performance that holds nothing back to show us not just what the scene is still capable of but the very power of 1782 itself. Five years is an amazingly short time for a band to put out three well-defined full-length albums, yet it comes as no surprise to me that 1782 has done no less than grow and impress at every given turn thus far.
