Typically, it takes a band decades to become a widely respected, known, and landmark name in their respective style to the point where it becomes one of the first that many think of when envisioning what the modern landscape of the sound has been shaped by. It hasn’t even been ten years since Rezn’s debut album in 2017, but it is in that time that this quartet has achieved such a status that is nigh on undeniable. Their power and talent are something that has always been worthy of being hailed amongst the best albums in each respective year virtually without exception with time only making Rezn a more impressive act with each successive release. It’s been three years since we last heard from Rezn, and even though none of us figured that they weren’t working on new material, the final result that is their fourth album is nothing short of utterly jaw-dropping.
As a reviewer, it’s always tempting to see any band of quality like Rezn and deem any new act as their best yet just to make things a little sensational and eye-catching for the reader, but that isn’t always the case as you might imagine. However, it is today in this instance that I say this with complete, unwavering conviction when taking into consideration everything Rezn has accomplished from “Let It Burn” to “Chaotic Divine”: “Solace” stands amazingly tall and bold as an effort that is sure to be one of the defining albums of Rezn’s growing legend. While not as long as its predecessor, “Solace” is no less deep. In six tracks across a 40-minute runtime, Rezn has crafted an utter monolith of heaviness that is undeniably gorgeous at virtually every given turn as each track doesn’t just show us just one of the many different sides of the band, but shows us that they are true artisans of the sound. Whether you want to call this doom, heavy psych, psychedelic doom, or literally anything else, this is one of those rare occasions where an album of this magnitude somehow manages to be summarized in one world: immaculate. Extremely few records a year, if any, earn such a descriptor but it is after days of losing myself in the wilderness that Rezn holds complete dominion over to truly bring “Solace” to life in the form of crushing riffs, jaw-dropping beauty, a gripping saxophone, and so much more than I can only plead you to investigate for yourself that I am left downright dumbfounded by the expertise that is on full display here.
Rezn has long made itself known as a name to be known, but it is with “Solace” that they deserve far more than just our acknowledgment. For all that went into “Solace”, Rezn deserves true and unyielding worship.
