Given the absolutely bountiful state that the world of anything stoner or doom related is nowadays, it’s no surprise to me that we’re able to find all sorts of acts coming out of the woodwork to find glory of their own with their excellence being just as fascinating as the greats that have come before. One only needs to look with a few clicks on Bandcamp to find new talent that has just popped up in order to find your next fixation in the style, and that proves to be no different for me. Out of nowhere, Fuzz Voyage has come before me and given what has been thrown down for this demo, I can only hope that it’s not too long before we hear more from the burgeoning act.
While I’m always more familiar with demos in the worlds of death and black metal, there is something particularly alluring about the prospect of a doomy stoner demo that just captures my imagination. It might have something to do with the fact that many veins of the sound are becoming progressively more raw and fuzzy as time goes on, but I’m not sure. Either way, I could care less as to why that might be happening so long as we’re getting bands like Fuzz Voyage! But four tracks adorn “Heavy Compass”, but it is every single one of them that are more than fit to stand on its own as pieces that Fuzz Voyage should be incredibly proud of as every single minute on display here has all the essentials when it comes to a listen that is all but necessary for anyone looking for riffs and a damn good time. Without so much as a single syllable sung for the whole of the demo, this is what instrumental stoner doom was always meant to sound like with this creation fit to be the supporting act for bands like Mountain Caller and Clouds Taste Satanic with all that’s delivered in such a short time with the quality downright invigorating especially given how new Fuzz Voyage itself is upon the scene. New names like this that seem to come out of nowhere are what the underground is prime real estate for with efforts like “Heavy Compass” only the best kind of treasure that is to be found by those who keep looking for that next glistening doubloon in those constantly expanding depths. If Fuzz Voyage has not proven themselves to be quite the shiny jewel here, then I don’t want any of that treasure anymore.
This is the beginning that many can only ever hope for when they start out on their own journeys into that riff-filled land. “Heavy Compass” already has it all from the undeniable hooks, the captivating fuzz, and the tremendous atmosphere that makes an instrumental creation take on a life truly of its own with practically every given inch of this creation something that I cannot help but wholeheartedly recommend to all who find themselves even mildly interested by this style. “Heavy Compass” is just the start of what’s to come from Fuzz Voyage, and I pray it’s not long before we hear more.
