None of us are strangers to comedy in any form, but it’s not something that we tend to see in the world of metal. Rather, it’s not something that we tend to see in the world of metal and it actually works out to not become something that falls flat at every turn with nothing working out. It’s a handful of times in any given year at most that we get a performance that manages to do the concept justice with Cuttered Flesh and Chopping Mall the only two in recent memory to have done it all and do it well. I honestly wasn’t expecting to add Evil Brain Taste as one more name to that list, but it’s after losing myself in their new album that I have no choice but to do so.
With an approach of death and thrash metal mixed together quite competently, I still find it hard to believe that it’s after all this time that I can finally enjoy just one more band that actually manages to pull off humor and intensity in such a form that they don’t overwhelm each other or sacrifice one for the other. For the very whole of “Number Two”, Evil Brain Taste manages to keep everything tasteful without ever once dropping the ball, lessening the intensity, or sacrificing their passion for B-movie greatness or gore to make for a record that manages to be just as eviscerating as it is a damn good time for those looking to really cut loose as they enjoy a skull-splitting riff at ferocious split while hearing retro clips that really hit a specific note that nothing else is quite capable of. Not to even mention the untouchable sense of melody that penetrates the very whole of the record practically right from the beginning and all the way unto its ending, “Number Two” rises above the vast majority of its competition in swift fashion such that you’re quickly roped into a whirlwind of a cackling bloodstorm that holds back for nothing and the end of the record being the only true finisher that one could hope to find from this unyielding onslaught. Yet, given all that Evil Brain Taste manages to accomplish within “Number Two”, it’s not unreasonable to dive right back into the madness.
This is a concoction that’s done with such aptitude and understanding of how to get it done that it really leaves you wanting more with the only answer being to scramble as you go to replay the album right from the beginning. Evil Brain Taste needs to prove nothing to anybody with all that they’ve delivered with “Number Two” more than enough to earn them a memorable spot in the eyes and ears of those who will find themselves before this magnificent chaos with only those too stubborn or foolish to come in the ones to deny what’s taken place here.
“Number Two” releases on May 22nd!
