Normally, whenever we start talking about the old school in relation to death metal, it’s a very singular conversation where the style is to be considered. The straightforward ferocious death metal is mostly what people tend to keep the conversation, but there are many old avenues that demand to be heralded and kept alive with that original vein with the prospect for greatness as potent here as anywhere else. There is nothing quite like some classic sounding death-doom for all that it is able to bring to the table and convey in its entirety with plenty doing the sound justice, but few new names are able to take the opportunities to the fullest. With their first full-length album, Sporae Autem Yuggoth” quickly proves itself to be an act that’s on an especially high level.
Few things can compare to a good layer of filth and grime that permeates every facet of the death metal in question as it can effortlessly elevate your work into something that many underground purveyors simply have to get a taste of, and to compare that with an intimidating infusion of doom metal that holds nothing back is to make for quite a potent concoction. Always feeling like they’re at home in the cobweb-ridden crypts, Sporae Autem Yuggoth does nothing but succeed with “…However It Still Moves”. For an entire hour, Sporae Autem Yuggoth hearkens back to the earliest days of what death-doom has always been about with more than enough of modern know-how to really enhance the experience to become much more than another mere attempt to tap into the greatness that has come before. Rather, “…However It Still Moves” captures the listener right from the very get-go and never once fails to deliver the goods in such a capacity that leaves one cowering before such terrific might. The maggot-riddled corpses rise at the beck and call of Sporae Autem Yuggoth once this immense procession begins in macabre earnest, and there isn’t anything that can stop it short of the entire world succumbing to undeath in its most grotesque form.
With everything brought together, “…However It Still Moves” lumbers forward as a viciously intimidating monolithic beast that no one can have any hope of stopping, and with this being but the first step of the behemoth that is Sporae Autem Yuggoth, I shudder to think what happens when the horror wretches another foot forward. This is an album that death-doom fans have been looking for over the years with every possibility that’s delivered here maximized all the way to the end of these dark tombs with the very prospect of more madness from the likes of Sporae Autem Yuggoth so captivating that I cannot deny my deep anticipation. Until then, however, the darkness that’s to be found within “…However It Still Moves” is not something that will be easy to shake off if at all.
