Wooden Veins – Imploding Waves

For years now, the state of doom metal has been nothing to underestimate or joke about. From a great level of innovation to a fiercely strong devotion to the classic veins, the future of doom has never been in question nor will it be left off in the hands of the incapable when the foundational legends pass on the torch. Given the immense talent that still finds its way into the many different veins of the sound, it is truly only a matter of time until a new name comes around that manages to impress at damn near every turn. With their sophomore effort, Chile’s Wooden Veins deliver a performance that is a more than worthy successor to their wildly flavorful debut album.

Chile is certainly one of those seemingly random places that many of us would not look initially when it comes to interesting new material, but South America has proven to be quite bountiful from time to time with its production of doom metal particularly fascinating to someone like me. Wooden Veins is merely the latest in a line of bands to come from the continent that have pleasantly surprised me, and it is with all that has been brought forward with “Imploding Waves” that I’m wondering if this is the most grandiose of such performances yet. A wildly dynamic creation that never treads the same sonic territory twice and is not afraid to get more than a little progressive in select moments, Wooden Veins proves itself quickly as an act that is not to be underestimated whatsoever. Not only are no two tracks the same, Wooden Veins somehow manages to make significant evolution take place in just any given song such that “Imploding Waves” feels amazingly organic and holds nothing back. You can truly feel how Wooden Veins puts everything on the table without so much as a shred left to regret not putting out there with the absolute entirety of their second album showing off every facet of their sound, showcasing the entire breadth of their talent, and executing it all with masterful precision with such tenacity and potency that one cannot help but become overwhelmed by what’s been brought forth.

Whether it’s the atmospheres, the heaviness, the melodies, or the bold nature of “Imploding Waves” that pulls you into the whirlwind of Wooden Veins, I can damn near guarantee that you will find yourself impressive by what’s been done here. This is a true showcase of excellence the likes of which we rarely see from new acts, and if this doesn’t perfectly poise Wooden Veins as one of the newest need-to-know acts out of South America then I’m not sure what exactly it would take for them to actually become such.
