Across all things that find themselves in the world of psychedelics, few can deny the immense quality and diversity that we are able to find the genre in without exception nor any stone left unturned when it comes to truly tapping into what’s possible within the seemingly endless bounds of the genre. Each year brings us something excellent, especially when it comes to the heavier side of what the sound is capable of. Whether it’s from the likes of King Buffalo bringing multiple albums in a year, Elder reinventing themselves in magnificent fashion, or fresh acts coming out of the woodwork to deliver us fresh greatness, there is always more than enough to talk about! Already, 2023 has been bountiful with the likes of Acid King’s long-awaited opus and Dozer’s return and anyone would be forgiven to assume that was by far the best that the realms of psychedelia would throw our way. With a truly stupendous collaboration that I don’t think many of us could have seen coming, Rezn and Vinnum Sabbathi make for a different kind of spectacle.
I think it’s safe to say that while we have been looking forward to a new creation from Vinnum Sabbathi, not many of us were expecting to hear new material from Rezn so quickly considering the release of “Solace” barely three months ago in all of its own grandeur. But glory waits for no one and is quite unpredictable even in the best of times. The very thought of a collaboration between these two names are what are typically found in nauight but pipe dreams, but there is nothing to be played with given the full breadth and prowess that’s to be had in supreme quality within the 32 minutes of “Silent Future”. A combination of other-worldly cosmic wonder, uncompromising intensity, and undeniably intoxicating melodies, this is an album that becomes all but effortless to fall into with the fabric of the creation itself what psychedelic mastery is made out of. Nothing is off the table for this massive creation that knows no where to stop in its vast expanse that doesn’t just show off what both of these bands have long been able to throw down, it shows what territories and wonders they can still claim for their own. “Silent Future” pulls you right into its grandeur from the very beginning without so much as a shred of the record refusing to loosen its grip on your psyche as it is every given aspect about the album that you will quickly find yourself enthralled by.
Whether it’s the gorgeous melodies, expansive cosmos that bends to the very wills of Rezn and Vinnum Sabbathi, the true musicianship that’s seen around every corner of this bombastic collaboration, or everything in between, “Silent Future” likely stands as a work that is of the absolute best that we’re to see from psychedelia in 2023 be it before now or in the final moments of December 31st. Both Rezn and Vinnum Sabbathi have put on a career-defining performance here, and I can guarantee that this is a work that will stand as a landmark comparison for everything that comes after it should they come back around this year, next year, and every year after that.
