Corroder – Both Feet in the Grave

Of all the sounds that have sought to really dig its heels in and remain entrenched in the old school as much as possible, thrash metal certainly has to be one sound that immediately comes to mind. Plenty of other styles out across the metal spectrum have done their best to keep the classic vein strong, sure, but incredibly few keep that so close to the chest with real conviction as what thrash metal has done over the decades. Relatively unchanged over the years, it’s an admirable feat despite the simple fact that it can become quite stale if you’re not coming upon the right talent to keep things interesting. It hasn’t been since the last release from Amken almost a year ago that I’ve come across an act of straight thrash that has held my attention. With its first EP, Corroder certainly caught me off-guard.

By no means whatsoever is this a grand work of the sound that I will claim revitalzes my love for all things thrash metal, but there’s no way to look upon this brief and furious creation and not feel as though as the right boxes had been checked off with Corroder delivering it all with more than enough aptitude. Not enough works throughout the modern world of thrash are able to bring to the table a truly raw sense of fury and hate with a rough texture to match in any meaningful capacity. Many absolutely try but Corroder finds itself in the minority when it comes to pulling it off even as “Both Feet in the Grave” finds the Norwegian act with more than enough room for improvement from every angle in every department. Yet, that doesn’t stop the EP from trying to be anything else than it was destined for: a blistering fourteen-minute burst of rage, hate, and speed that deserves to be cranked loud with the very walls of society tumbling the soundwaves set forth upon humanity. It wastes no time, takes no survivors, leaves nothing to chance, and takes every opportunity to throw another emulsified corpse upon the charred earth. “Both Feet in the Grave” is an undeniably voracious piece.

Right from the beginning, it’s painfully clear that nothing will stand in the way of Corroder with all the destruction in its wake, and there’s no sign of smoke clearing nor the flames abating any time soon should Corroder keep this trajectory. If their can manage to do that, then “Both Feet in the Grave” starts to sound like more of a promise than a possibility of the horrors to come.
