Thorn – Evergloom

Nothing can ever truly compare to an artist whose drive knows not when to stop nor how to deliver something that doesn’t immediately cause people from all over to gravitate toward its grandeur. We are lucky enough to live in an age of prowess where one can have their own home studio to toil away at a pace that heretofore has been relatively unheard of for single musicians to pull off themselves. The list of such talented names has been growing more and more as the years have gone on with it always feeling as though there’s a new one just around the corner for us to discover. In just the last three years, Thorn has risen from the void to quickly make quite a name for itself with its forthcoming third full-length album in two years only continuing the act’s upward trend of destruction.

Any band that has this much output in a short span of time should rightfully be put under a microscope given the obvious factor that it is all too easy to sacrifice quality for quantity. It’s the sort of thing that any reasonable listener would and should be concerned about no matter how many times the band in question succeeds despite the odds. Given that Thorn is quickly making itself known as another such ambitious and tenacious act, it makes one wonder whether or not its forthcoming creation of “Evergloom” would deliver, and I’m more than thrilled to say that it shatters expectations immediately! A tremendously ferocious blend of doom and death metal with a slight inclination towards the latter, the ten massive tracks of “Evergloom” deliver such magnificent darkness that one cannot help but bask in its supremacy. This is thick, cavernous intensity that knows no bounds nor how to leave any survivors after its muck and filth have spread far beyond the horizon as it is all driven insatiably by powerful riffs, a commanding presence, and the sheer will to see the dark deeds done right unto its final breath. Nothing stands in the way of Thorn’s conquest to devour all light in the universe as it is in every given moment of “Evergloom” that we’re given a ferocious display and understanding of what it means to make death metal of this breed done at a high level such that one cannot help but fall to their knees before such a creation.

The odds were certainly against Thorn when it set upon crafting this work, but that didn’t wasn’t a challenge whatsoever. Titanic right from the beginning and haunting even well after its onslaughts have ceased, “Evergloom” stands as defiance upon all the light in the world without so much as a shred of mercy or compromise to be had no matter where you look with the very soul of the record out to taste flesh. Thorn proves to be a voracious act time after time with this latest assault easily one of its most potent, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see another offensive launched upon the realm sooner than we’d expect.
