As the legends of the past only seem to get better and better as the years continue to pile on, it’s no surprise to see many new bands come around to give blatant and unashamed worship to those bands with every legend having a legion of fresh names to keep their legacy going as purely as they can make it. When it comes to Death, there’s no shortage of bands out there that do their best to perpetuate that particular sound and style of old school death metal, but few have been as effective as Inhuman Condition. Drawing from their massive collective experience in many big names across metal and growing together as an undeniable unit of modern death metal, Inhuman Condition has made quite a name for themselves with this new EP being a small offering but one many of us are more than eager to gobble up.
Despite being formed just three years ago, this is a name that anyone who pays attention to the current state of the death metal underground should know damn near instantly. With two wildly successful full-length albums in the bag with only a mere thirteen months between them as well as taking into consideration the extreme level of quality in the bands all these members have been part of, it makes one wonder what else Inhuman Condition is possible of when they get the ball rolling. An offering like “Panic Prayer” is a brief stop in such an unyielding onslaught with it very much feeling like a slight mirror version of Goregäng’s most recent work, the “Long Live the Grime” EP, (which also features two-thirds of Inhuman Condition), but in no way do these four offerings accompanied by four live pieces leave the listener unsatisfied.
The band’s fierce understanding of what has always made classic death metal such a damn good time comes back together with their signature viciousness and injection of a hardcore attitude to ensure the high-octane approach that has always made Inhuman Condition something to behold, yet “Panic Prayer” very much feels like an attack upon the morality of the soul itself. The EP is a tour de force of voracious death metal by all accounts, but it is the question that it asks in such a short amount of time that makes one think. When the chips are down and the end is beckoning you to come under its vast cloak, what is it that you will do as society cannibalizes itself and the very light of the universe snuffs itself out? Do you look to rationalize the insanity, seek salvation from wherever possible, or do you find solace in the finality of it all? Delivered with real power, riffs to rip your throat right out, and the attitude to bring it all together in stupendous fashion, Inhuman Condition has done quite a bit with the seemingly little that’s brought to the table for “Panic Prayer”. In no small way, Inhuman Condition has done a lot with a little. And none of that is even talking about the utterly infectious Blue Öyster Cult cover!
Without a doubt, Inhuman Condition has been positioning itself to become a true name in the world of modern death metal that is not to be ignored with this EP only adding to the band’s streak of domination to make it three straight years of madness, blood, and mastery! “Panic Prayer” can easily be seen as a footnote in the impressive discography that Inhuman Condition might eventually craft, but in no way does this piece find itself worthy of being ignored whatsoever and I feel immense pity for those who skip this delicious little treat over simply because they don’t think the piece has enough going for it.
