Of all that excellence that the landscape of modern doom and psychedelia has dished out, Slomatics has got to be one one of the most impressive creations we’ve been blessed with. Not only a vast body of work that spans piles upon piles of fabulous split albums with bands worldwide and six utterly monolithic full-length albums, but Slomatics also has a viciously impressive body of work to match its undeniable quality. After three viciously powerful splits within barely over a year, Slomatics is back with their seventh full-length after four years since its predecessor, and it’s hard to look upon the work and not shed a tear at the mastery on full display that’s presented at every given turn.
Slomatics is one of those acts whose sound could not change in the slightest over the years and the band’s mastery would simply put them on auto-pilot to clear success, but dominance of this sort is never one-dimensional nor does it seek rigidity as time goes on. Rather, it seeks to expand and explore. With “Strontium Fields”, that’s precisely what Slomatics has achieved in heaping amounts to make these eight tracks some of the band’s most experimental and fascinating to date. The creation is absolutely overflowing with light and the joys that many of us took for granted before the pandemic showed us what the world can be in an instant as we’re given far more than the riffs and psychedelics that are typically for any Slomatics experience no matter however higher it is when compared to the competition. “Strontium Fields” accomplishes so much in its runtime with it really feeling as though Slomatics did their best to condense every part of their sound while never once failing to explore new avenues, see where they lead, and return with the fruits of their labor delicious and tantalizing. Nothing felt off the table with this album. It’s all brought together with such attention to detail and outstanding cohesion that “Strontium Fields” immediately earns the right to be considered as one of the year’s most engaging when it comes to anything in the realms of doom and psychedelics, and I would challenge anyone who would defy such a notion.
One might expect Slomatics to have hit any sort of slump after an almost 20-year offensive upon the scene that has yet to see any sort of retreat or reprieve, but there are many reasons why Slomatics has remained as one of the few at the pinnacle in all things modern doom has thrown our way with “Strontium Fields” simply being the latest reason for us to give the name praise from all angles. This is what happens when mastery meets experimentation through passion with these eight tracks certainly being close to what can be considered the best-case scenario for such an event.
