The Howling Eye – List Do Borykan

Psychedelia comes in many forms. That’s a big reason why most of us keep finding ourselves returning to its mind-bending depths time after time as it can easily be the case that no two experiences sound the same if you keep your mind and taste open to much of what there is out there to absorb. From heavy psych to its instrumental reaches to where things become more than a little demented, there are plenty of areas to explore, but only the daring and accomplished can go into the very depths of psychedelia and come out with something that holds an interesting form but is no less than fascinating to look upon. I was not expecting The Howling Eye to be the one to deliver such an effort, but it’s after multiple spins and really allowing the album to marinate in my consciousness that the glory of this frenetic and organic record is evident to me.

Already, The Howling Eye had nothing to prove with their work from five years ago, “Sonorous”, already showing us that the Polish act is more than capable of delivering their own brand of great and flavorful psychedelia which makes the sharp right turn that is “List Do Borykan” even more interesting. Bringing more than a little bit of jazz influence into the mix to make the material all-around funkier in every regard, the seven tracks that take us from one planet to the next, dancing in the cosmic dust found betwixt, it’s hard to look upon “List Do Borykan” and not be sucked into its many different layers. The Howling Eye knows precisely how to keep you engaged and more than entertained as it’s throughout the whole of the record that we’re given enough helpings of riffs, bass-led passages, very selective moments of heaviness, and more than enough atmosphere and sights to grace an entire planet with absolutely all of it being held together by the simple fact that you can tell these guys are having a tremendously fun time putting it all together. Their energy is undeniable for the utter entirety of “List Do Borykan” as every bit of the record from its opener with its funk and free will movements to the finale where we see The Howling Eye take flight one last time to really show us just how much of a spectacle this album truly is.

This could easily be an album that many overlook given that it doesn’t fall neatly into what many would expect out of the sprawling realm of psychedelic rock, but I cannot help but implore you to give “List Do Borykan” for once you do then you’ll be taken on a trip with so much color and personality that you’ll wonder why you ever hesitated in the first place. I waited a good deal before finally sitting down to type this review as I felt this record needed more than a couple of listens to really get a feel for it, and I couldn’t be any happier with that decision for now the soul of The Howling Eye sits before me in the form of “List Do Borykan” and what a sight it is!
