For all the times that metal has gone down its more traditional and orthodox routes, there are a few that dare to take things to different worlds altogether. Those fringes of what’s possible even as we find ourselves on the other side of so much imagination and experimentation, the darkest corners of what metal has to offer still have much to deliver unto us as new names continuously find darker depths to explore with horrific sights to match. Acausal Intrusion immediately made itself known as such an act when it came around just two years ago with a follow-up only sixteen months later, and it was there already that Acaustal Intrusion was a foreboding name by all accounts. With its third effort, however, everything seems to have evolved into something truly intimidating.

Three albums in less than three years is a daunting task by any measure. It becomes even more problematic when you’re dealing with material that’s as dense and hostile as what Acausal Intrusion has become known for, but it is here that this band shows itself to be more than competent to take on such a monumental task. While it was their first two records that set the board for what they’re capable of, “Panpsychism” sees Acausal Intrusion undergo a dark blossoming. An effort that stands as a defiance to the very notion of light in this pathetic universe, the cavernous hunger of “Panpsychism” knows no bounds as this particular breed of black-death metal certainly lives up to the extreme tendencies of the sound with the technical prowess of Acausal Intrusion speaking for itself as the record goes on. Bookended by dirges of atmospheres that are as impenetrably dark as the very night, this is ultra-cosmic terror combined with the best of what each sound can elicit with “Panpsychism” always managing to bury itself into the very recesses of your mind such that it becomes impossible to remove yourself from. It’s oppressive and all-encompassing to the point that the only solace one can find in its chaos and self-consumption being to simply submit oneself wholly to the madness that is to be had around every turn. Only then do the evil secrets of “Panpsychism” begin to reveal themselves to you and Acausal Intrusion takes on a somehow even more horrific form with its own macabre air of haunting wonder.

Works like this are why the murky borders of metal will remain interesting and outright crazy. There are legions of acts out there in those reaches that will never be able to be truly pinned down by typical classification or mortal understanding, yet it is because of names like Acausal Intrusion that keep us crawling back into that very abyss time and time again. And with creations like “Panpsychism”, why wouldn’t you be taking that dive?
