Just as hard as it can be for any band to find a foothold in the modern state of any sound it can be just as simple as putting one foot in front of the other and showing the world what you’re made of. The new generations of metal have been finding that to be the case left and right with many finding success by just going for it with plenty finding tremendous success despite how wide and deep the underground has become over the years given the digital age we find ourselves in. Begravement was one such act who threw down real promise two years ago with their debut EP, but it is now with their first full-length album that Begravement doesn’t just put their best foot forward but shows us that they are a name that demands to have one sharp eye kept on them at all times.

It’s often the best approach to know what sound you’re going for and focus on it such that everything feels sharpened like the edge of a knife so that you become as deadly as possible when it comes to your particular sound. Some, though, like to take an all-encompassing approach with there always being the risk of the band in question biting off more than they can chew. That could have easily been the case for Begravement since the beginning with their eclectic sound that is very inclusive of much of what modern death metal is capable of. If it was their debut that laid the foundation for such an expansive sound, it is every corner of “Horrific Illusions Beckon” that sees the American quartet bloodthirsty in every instance and more than able to deliver the goods every step of the way. A bombastic display that brings in much of what death metal has been able to draw from other styles be it thrash, doom, or black metal in multiple instances, “Horrific Illusions Beckon” is viciously eclectic for all of its nine tracks with Begravement never once failing to impress. Be it in the form of impressive riffs, displays of craziness through wild instrumentation for real flair and flavor, or the very dynamic nature of each track that holds back for nothing, this is the record that is surely just the start of many great things for Begravement.

A lot could have gone wrong in the process of this beast, but Begravement has truly defied the odds here at practically every turn. No stone is left unturned nor any body left unsullied in the wake of “Horrific Illusions Beckon” as every minute of the record is packed with great know-how of death metal combined magnificently with the gut to pursue a vicious sound that goes for the throat with terrifying results each time it lunges forth. Things have only just started for Begravement, and they’ve just put the best possible foot forward.
