Bekor Qilish – The Flesh of a New God

It’s always a fascinating thing to see just how quickly a band can come back from any given album with new material that not only shows that the band in question hates the concept of idle hands, but that their evolution is not something that happens in small increments. I think many of us should have expected Bekor Qilish to return to us so quickly after last year’s debut album from the act, but such a quick response is constantly something that catches one off-guard given that we’re still hardwired to expect years between albums. Bekor Qilish seeks to poise itself as one of the many in the underground who don’t sit still for long though with this sophomore effort the next step forward for the band’s sound that has the very weight of a supernova.

Having heard any single minute of what Bekor Qilish brought forth for their debut, “Throes of Death From the Dreamed Nihilism”, it should be obvious to any who has done so that this was not a band to underestimate from the very onset. A mixed bag of extreme metal with a clear and voracious edge of progressiveness that holds nothing back in any possible form, the stage was set for Bekor Qilish to take the underground by the throat. With “The Flesh of a New God”, that’s precisely what we’re bearing witness to! The evolution to a sound that always already caustic and maddening to begin with, the eight tracks of “The Flesh of a New God” stand not just as a persistent embodiment of chaos that is absolutely unyielding in every aspect, but the album is a true force of cosmic horrors that are not to be reckoned with. Between the scathing intensity and the crazy spectrum of all that is included in the crafting of the record itself, Bekor Qilish has delivered an incredibly dense listen that has much more to offer than what I think many might expect from a band that certainly exudes “typical” black-death metal energy if you’re not looking past the surface of what’s happening here. To dive deeper, though, is to find yourself in an abyss whose swirling darkness and flesh-peeling winds are of the sort that refuses to let you go no matter what you may try to do. All of that combined with the clear evolution whose foundations were laid barely a year ago, “The Flesh of a New God” is a broad slab of dark madness that is not to be taken lightly whatsoever.

Works like this are few and far between by all accounts, yet bands like Bekor Qilish are narrowing those gaps very quickly if a release schedule like this has anything to take from. Many try and few succeed, but I have nothing but confidence for the very future of Bekor Qilish given all that it has accomplished in just a year. There are many dark truths and haunted visages to explore within the terrors of “The Flesh of a New God”, yet one truth stands above all: Bekor Qilish is far from a name that we’ve heard the last of.
