Since the earliest days of the sound, the underground has been teeming with bands that are the definition of hostility. Few genres in the entire spectrum of music have embodied that as well as metal as all that death metal has become over the decades. There are legions upon legions of names out there for us to look to when it comes to uncompromising heaviness born out of darkness with all the power to match such a deadly set-up, and Fossilzation made a claim to be in the upper echelons of such greatness since their debut EP just two years ago. There was much to be spectulated in that time even after an engaging split with Ritual Necromancy, but it is in every step taken with their first full-length album that Fossilization asserts its dominance.
Given the fact that the duo behind Fossilization also consists of half the line-up for the dark enttiy that is Jupiterian, quality is not an issue that we would have to discuss whatsoever when considering the very future of Fossilization. This is death metal the likes of which wastes no time lurching forth from the darkness where it was spawned from with the very whole of “Leprous Daylight” embodying much of what Fossilization has already become known for while still carving a path forward through the festering rot as the band’s sound evolves bit by bit. Faster than its predecessors but always making time for its more doom-oriented tendencies, the eight tracks of this album are anything but lightweight material in any given form. As cavernous as much as it is carnivorous in every given instance, “Leprous Daylight” is an unforgiving, uncompromising slab of intensity the likes of which death metal is always close to delivering at such high quality with incredibly few able to bring it to the table in any meaningful vessel. Between their combined experience in other bands and a clear vision that has made the band a constant name to know since it first came around in 2021, how can one be surprised by what Fossilization accomplishes in this monolithic performance? Nothing is left to chance, no survivors left untainted, and the very heaviness leaves a stain wherever the band goes; the power of “Leprous Daylight” cannot be denied!
It should have been obvious to us from the very beginning that Fossilization was going to be a name that could not be underestimated or simply shoved to the side for one reason or another, but to predict such things are tough even for the most visionary among us. With all that “Leprous Daylight” brings to the table, though, one is made to wonder how anything other than this record could have come forth from talent such as this.
