New names coming out of the woodwork are events that are far from uncommon given what the very landscape of the underground scene has become since the dawn of the digital age where bands are sprouting forth from the darkness at a rate that certainly feels faster than ever before. For many fresh names made by the young generation, it can be quite difficult to really gain a strong footing in a sound that’s as cutthroat with all that there is to discover and hear in the greater scene at large, but it’s when a new act comes around made by accomplished musicians who know their way around ferocity and brutality, there’s a potential to see a band’s rise become no less than meteoric. With their first full-length album, Temple of Scorn is poised to do the latter in exemplary fashion.
Just looking at the past experiences of all of these musicians is enough to do much more than warrant the cock of an eyebrow in interest. Without a shred of overstating, Temple of Scorn was destined for success from its very inception with this particular brand of death metal nothing less than of the most uncompromising variety that seeks nothing but the flames once it has crushed your throat in one fell swoop. In all eight tracks of “Funeral Altar Epiphanies”, that’s just the beginning of what Temple of Scorn unleashes upon mankind. From the very moment that you enter this dark catacomb where the very notion of life is a distant memory, Temple of Scorn puts forth a terrifying display of understanding of their death metal that becomes nigh on infectious to more you fall into it with all the hooks that one could ask for, darkness that seeks to consume all light in the universe, and more than a little influence from the realms of doom to add a special thick layer of intensity upon an already-ferocious blend that is nothing to underestimate or ignore lest it comes for you in your very dreams. The flames of Hell itself pour from “Funeral Altar Epiphanies” like the unholiest water imaginable as Temple of Scorn does much more in this record than through down some mild heaviness backed up by half-baked imagery. Rather, Temple of Scorn goes out of their way to ensure that their presence is something that is not to be denied out of the very gate with “Funeral Altar Epiphanies” the first vessel to bring that about.
A big step like this in any band’s time is one that can often be met with uncertainty and a sense of worry if the people behind it all haven’t gotten the most of their sound in place and honed. For all that Temple of Scorn brings to the table here, uncertainly and a rickety foundation are nowhere in sight. Everything that’s been brought forth to bring this first full-length album to light is of a truly evil sort that knows precisely how to entice you into the overwhelming darkness of “Funeral Altar Epiphanies” such that by the time you finally realize the trap, Temple of Scorn is in the perfect position to weave its vile magics upon your soul.
