With the many different avenues that metal has taken over the years, there are plenty of different sounds to the point that there is definitely something for everybody, should they just put in the legwork to find it. As such, traditional approaches of classic veins are still something that we see given constant representation as that’s what many of us grew up on with tons still willing to perpetuate its greatness in some form or another. Traditional doom metal is something that plenty have tried their hand at just as we’ve seen with black and death metal many times over, yet few are able to really grasp the sound without a shred of compromising and talent to boot. For their first full-length album, it cannot be overstated how well Lord Mountain understood that very concept.
Pulling straight from the classic vein of any sound is a tricky thing to execute simply due to the fact that it’s hard to pull it off without having modern influence in your sound to compromise those classic tropes while simultaneously doing your best to not make your material feel like a hollow copy. That’s something that far too many succumb to despite their best efforts, but it’s with the eight tracks brought forth in “The Oath” that Lord Mountain shows us how it’s done in such a fashion that is no less than magnificent to watch unfold. Along every step of this bold effort that honors that classic spirit while never once failing to inject loads of personality and focus into the mix, Lord Mountain’s execution leaves one stunned between the riffs, the calculated heaviness, and the bold nature that takes many different forms to effortlessly make “The Oath” an album that is as multi-faceted in its glory as it is viciously engaging. This is the kind of record that bands are always trying to create as they emulate those original flavors of doom that we still love and revere to this day with incredibly few able to actually deliver on such a promise and put forth a work that stands tall against any test thrown its way while always showing us that the performance is one that cannot be denied. Without question, Lord Mountain has achieved just that with “The Oath”.
Surely, this is but the beginning for what Lord Mountain is capable of with the future looking incredibly bright for the Californian act if they are to stay down this stylistic path. Even if they choose to stray and tackle a different sound, the quality and magnificence that is showcased in every given moment of “The Oath” is of a sort that leads to greatness and infectious wonder virtually no matter what turn is made with Lord Mountain surely up to the task whatever it may be.
