Of all the old schools from which the current shape of metal grew up, death metal’s has to be one of the most revered and intimidating for many reasons. The resurgence of that old school sound is unlike what many other styles in metal are able to boast with the sheer number of bands bringing it back and continuously doing it glory being quite large by all accounts. As such, there are many bands who just aren’t able to quite make the cut. When we get an act like Abominated, though, we’re given a powerful creation that makes you realize just how much excellence the old school still has to dish out.
As is the case in many scenarios throughout life, if it isn’t broken then don’t try to fix it. Death metal is something that has seen tons of experimentation and progression over the decades such that the style is now a sprawling landscape filled with all sorts of different sounds accomplishing an array of achievements in their own rights, but the old school has a tried-and-true approach that should not be underestimated nor changed. Bands like Abominated understand that perfectly. Given the fact that “Traumatic Putrefaction” is but the band’s first record, I’d say things are off to a tremendous start for Abominated’s conquest into the unforgiving underground that death metal has always been with every single one of these nine tracks showing us that Abominated already knows precisely what they’re doing right out of the gate. Laden at every step with intoxicating riffs that usher in the unforgiving power that cannot be overstated with this offensive being one of the most potent in recent times since the last assault from Paganizer, “Traumatic Putrefaction” immediately makes itself standout from the rest. Already without doing much that hasn’t been done thousands of times before, Abominated manages to do immense justice for the sound without once fumbling or giving us any sort of sign that they may not be up to the task. Rather, “Traumatic Putrefaction” is a simple but viciously effective work of the old school that pays it loads of respect and perpetuates it with indisputable power.
The death metal underground is a particularly unforgiving environment to find yourself in as a new band. Not only do you really have to prove yourself many times in order to really gain more than a little bit of attention, the glory of those who come before increases the pressure for many. This is but the first step that Abominated has taken into that hostile realm, but it is with everything that they brought to the table with “Traumatic Putrefaction” that the step is made with loads of competence. Whatever it is that’s to come next for Abominated, “Traumatic Putrefaction” promises total domination is all that’s to follow.
