This is one of those instances where the review feels practically unnecessary. Cannibal Corpse has long been a household name in the world of death metal for all the right reasons from their rise to infamy thanks to the frenzied media in the 90s to cultivated a sound that stands virtually second to none still to this day. Their grip upon the sound has been undeniable since their earliest albums with their albums from the last ten to fifteen years only perpetuating that to a significant degree. Where many others would have fallen off for at least one record, Cannibal Corpse has remained a monolithic presence of consistent quality through unyielding brutality. As if to hammer that home even more, their sixteenth album stands tall despite following “Violence Unimagined” just two years later.
The review practically writes itself in this scenario. Ever since “Kill”, Cannibal Corpse’s sound has remained insanely consistent in its production with the levels of technicality ebbing and flowing from one record to the next such that each album certainly rides in the same realm where this band reigns supreme yet they each have their own personalities and terror for us to lose ourselves in. “Chaos Horrific” furthers that trend magnificently with these ten tracks precisely what fans of “Violence Unimagined” wanted even more of to the point where it’s no surprise to see people claiming this record as Cannibal Corpse’s best record in years for some with others hailing it as an effortless win. And, really, what else should we come to expect from the masters of undeath spreading itself upon the living? Their ubiquitous brand of horror comes together to make these riffs, nightmares, and gore-infested bodies an experience that is certainly the highlight of death metal in 2023 as they make quick work of the competition to immediately show off their unwavering dominance. “Chaos Horrific” is a non-stop ride through a layer of Hell that has been hand-crafted by Cannibal Corpse over the decades with the screams of the damned, the howls of the starved zombies, the ground perpetually drenched in blood, and peace is nowhere to be found. Death reigns eternal in this land with Cannibal Corpse the veteran warlord whose tenure has yet to come even close to expiring.
Works like this are what legends are made of. Out of everything that death metal has given us in recent times, Cannibal Corpse is an entity that has never been caught lacking nor has it ever come close to putting forth an effort that feels half-baked, uninteresting, or untrue to the core ideals of Cannibal Corpse that have been cemented for decades at this point. “Chaos Horrific” shows Cannibal Corpse at a score of sixteen for sixteen undeniable victories for all things god-tier death metal, and that streak likely won’t be ending any time soon.
